This issue made me think he was looking back/reminiscing at the first half. His standard being something that was his - as you said - foundation, what he was used to, what was normal for him in the past. Then the second half is him wanting to establish new things for himself. His standard being something he's looking to accomplish and setting for himself. At least that's what I think. ^^
