relearning spring

i'm rereading martin buber's "i and thou" for the first time in years- and remembering how thought-provoking it is. i'll probably write about it more when i'm done with it, and not so woozy from eating too much beef in 24 hours.

it's a lazy day here in philly, cool but not cold, not even a speck of snow on the horizon, despite all of the newscasters' dire warnings, and for the first time it feels like spring might really be peeking around the corner.

not some false start, like the sudden hazy afternoons we've been having here, seventy-five degrees with clear skies that breeze warm, skies that twelve hours later dip to thirty-five degrees and sullen greys.

one thing i miss about suburbia is the constant reminders given about the changing seasons: trees dropping flowers-bombs at you as you walk on by, wide-set buildings that let the air move freely (no wind-tunnels howling in suburbia, no).

there's little else i miss about suburbia, though. we see our neighbors out on their stoops more often than not nowadays, children playing ball in our cramped street, car-dodging when the rare vehicle makes its way in to park. people humming all around, less frenetic than just plain busy. and don't forget the school kids walking by on their way home from classes, the girls now ruching their skirts up with every degree the temperature rises. boys unbuttoning shirts a bit, not just to let people know that they are done for the day, but more because then can.

i missed spring in philly last year, off in training (north jersey hell) as i was. it's nice to see life budding all around, somehow even nicer because of how new and fresh this is. relearning spring- it's nice.

buber, spring, i and thou
