Grey

I don’t know when it started. One day it just struck me how I never could see his face: his head always ducked or half-turned away, his eyes partly hidden behind the curtain of his long hair. I came up to him where he was standing by the wall, away from the lights, and took his chin in my hand. He tried to escape-from my touch, from my eyes, but I managed to see- The difference. His eyes had always been grey, but stormy grey, sometimes warm grey, never dull. What I saw that day, before he pushed me away and disappeared in the numerous rooms, were eyes grey like dust and like November.

I started to watch him closer and notice further changes that came gradually as he was falling deeper and deeper. His voice became softer and toneless. I tried to remember what his laughter had used to sound like, or his exciting whisper, when both the tone and the words had made me light-headed and weak from need. I tried to make him laugh and I tried to provoke his whisper. They wouldn’t come back.

Stubbornly he lingered in the shadows of the ancient house, keeping away from the light and the noise. Sometimes it was so easy to forget about him altogether, him who’d been the soul of anything we'd done, him- During our meetings, when I happened to raise my head above the shoulders of the others, bent over the uncountable rolls of parchment, I could see him, leaning in the doorway, watching us with an unreadable, empty expression, ready to disappear any moment. The art of disappearing he mastered to perfection.

I couldn’t stop it.

His hair, his famous mane of shining black hair was losing its intensity and colour, hanging around his face and hiding the high cheekbones.

Even his skin-

Finally he was arriving at a compromise, after a whole life of fighting, of contradicting his name. Finally he was reaching the average, which happened to be grey.

That last evening, though, it was different. He was black and white again, both at once, flickering and striking. Until. Until he fell, fear carved on his greying face.
