[Afternoon, library, there's a teenage boy addressing the village at large:]

Do you like happy endings?

[Nope. No context. For all other things, Leo can be found around the village today-- mostly in the library, and the grocery store later where he'll be considering bottles of what seems to be concentrate. Orange concentrate. Eh, crowded ( Read more... )

Yes!

[So simple.]

Well, in real life. In books, I like the bittersweet like Casablanca, because real life never gets that many happy endings, now does it?

[Or maybe not so simple after all.]

[Well, that's a little more different from the general consensus so far.]

It rarely does. Why do you prefer bittersweet to happy endings in books?

Happy endings in books are for the delusional who just want to pretend things will be fine. A sugar pill pick-me-up. It bores me.

A little escapism won't hurt but too much isn't any good?

Other people can like what they like, but I find it boring, that's all. Like a fairy tale about princesses and knights where the princess never does anything except scream and cry for help. Or maybe befriend the dragon who still gets killed anyway. That kind of thing doesn't interest me.

Would you prefer it if the princess went on adventures with the dragon then?

Of course it can. Anything's possible in books!

Someone should write that then. That'd be a cool happy ending. And the knight would be sad so it wouldn't be all happy.

Well, he could do something else. The book just wouldn't be about him.

Shall I tell you if I ever find a book like that?

So are you a librarian, writer, or a bit of both?

Neither. I just like reading books.

[But he likes the idea of being a librarian. All those books.]
