I'm fairly sure the only important gender difference is the difference between inherent MA/PA... I can't remember if you can balance this out with leveling in certain classes or not, though, since I don't pay serious attention to growing any stats other than speed. (Which is easy, because who doesn't want to level as a ninja?)
Yeah, I was thinking about that when you mentioned Balthier and Luso. It's already easy for generics to get outclassed by story characters in the old version and Balthier at least is pretty near unstoppable from what I've heard.
Dancer skills factor brave into their success rate IIRC, so just pick a female unit with good brave. :) Or you could bring up someone's brave with mediator skills and stuff if you don't mind a little work.
I'd imagine it's kinda confusing, and the existence of two wildly different translations probably isn't helping you process the advice you're getting. xD I just got FFTA2 and a DS for Christmas (yay!!!) so I expect I'll be getting confused with that myself soon.
I think of wizard and time mage as classes to learn the spells from and get out of quickly, using their skills with other, better classes. I don't really bother with summoner because of their atrocious speed (both stat growth and charge time), which is I think the second worst after calculator.
