Good Afternoon,
I have been #1 on call for the past few days. It has been the first stretch that the system has been acting funny. The power grid in Calgary, regardless of your location, is mostly good but has it's moments. It isn't what a western power grid should be or as stable as one should be but it works for the most part.
When the weather changes, getting colder, this cause power bump which our monitoring equipment pick up on and "alert" us to. The problem is that these flickers, or brown outs, don't cause any disruption in the system, they just muck around with the sensors, trip them and reset them. I get two phone calls when this happens. Yesterday I got two at midnight and two at 3 in the morning. Last night I got one at 4am, rather this morning I guess.
What is irritating is that it was just a single call this morning. The sensors switched to bad and back so quickly that the bad message never got sent so I got a call from the server room telling me everything was good at 4am. I only got to doze again before my alarm went off an hour later.
Such is the life of a systems person.
Cheers,
Wayne
