Chapter 16: Death and Birth

"Mint? Mint, where are you?"

Young Mint giggled behind the tree she was hiding in.

"Where could that girl be?" Her 40 year old stepfather rubbed his chin thoughtfully as he looked around.

"Found you! Daddy I found her!" Her 10 year old stepbrother exclaimed and waved his hands.

Her stepfather chuckled, grabbed Mint and raised her up high. "Good work, son."

"Jun, no fair! I thought we were partners?" Mint pouted.

"Sorry nee-chan," Jun said sheepishly and slung his arm on her shoulder once she was on the ground again.

She was older than Jun by 5 years although she looked younger.

"Okay children, time for your baths," Mint's mother announced.

"Do we have to?" Mint and Jun whined.

"Now, now. You have to obey your mother." Her stepfather gently scolded.

"Yes, father."

At a young age, Mint lost her real father. Her mother had been devastated and didn't know what to do. For years, she had relied on Mint's father and now that he was gone, it was like she lost her direction in life.

Luckily, she met a young widower. His name was Inuki. He was a human and he knew they were Whisperers but he wasn't scared of them. He didn't despise them either.

Inuki asked her mother for help regarding his 8 month old son. He said he didn't know anything about babies.

Unknowingly, Inuki gave Mint's mother a new direction.

"When I held Jun for the first time in my arms and his little eyes looked up to me with so much trust, I knew I couldn't say no to Inuki's request," her mother had once told her.

Since then, the two adults became friends and eventually, Inuki fell in love with Mint's mother.

Mint's mother was fond of Inuki, too. She didn't love him the way she loved Mint's father because Whisperers always only had one true love but Inuki was like family to her.

And so they all became one family.

Mint was very happy. She had a new father then and a new brother.

Inuki might be human but he was unlike any human Mint used to hear of. Inuki was gentle and kind and supportive. He treated Mint like his own daughter.

Jun too, took after his father. Even though they told him when he was old enough to understand that she and her mother was Whisperers, his treatment of them didn't change. He was still a strange mix of goofy and sweet around them.

To Inuki and Jun, Whisperers and humans were no different from each other.

But the other humans didn't think so. They attacked their home and tried to kill Inuki for being a 'traitor to his kind'.

Her mother protected him but there were too many attackers. She and Inuki died protecting each other.

Mint fled with Jun.

She didn't hate the humans though. To do so would be like hating what Inuki was. And Inuki had always told her that hate never does anyone any good.

"Nee-chan, are you leaving me?" Jun cried and refused to let go of Mint's hand.

They were in front of a small, cozy house where a middle-aged couple lived. Mint had heard that the couple could not produce any children but they would love to have a son. They were both kind and caring too.

"You'd be safer without me, Jun. Your new mother and father will take care of you."

"Nee-chan, I want to be with you," Jun insisted.

Mint smiled sadly and hugged her brother. "I'll always, always watch over you," she whispered.

Green lights coiled around them and in an instance, Jun lost consciousness.

When he woke up, he could not remember anything about himself aside from his name.

The couple took him in and he became their beloved son.

Mint had kept her promise. She had always watched Jun from a far. She was proud of the man he had become. She was glad that even though she had to erase his memories, Jun had grown up to be a man that Inuki had always reminded him to be.

Soon, Mint had met a male Whisperer, fallen in love, got married and had children.

But another tragedy shook her life.

"Mother! Mother!"

"What is it Eri?" Mint asked her youngest daughter.

"My brothers..."

Eri didn't say anything else. It was like it was hard for her to do so. There was fear in her tear-stricken eyes.

"Say no more." Mint embraced Eri and quietly cried with her child.

She had already seen it in her visions. She knew it was going to happen.

She knew her three sons would be killed by hunters.

She just didn't expect it to be today.

After that, they left Azure. There was simply too many painful memories there.

It was years later when Mint had another vision. This time, it was someting to rejoice about. And so, she told Eri about it.

"One of your sons would bring peace between humans and magical creatures."

"One of my sons? I will have more than one son? How troublesome," Eri grumbled.

Mint laughed. "You are blessed Eri."

When Eri was nearing the day of giving birth to her first child, they traveled to a thick forest. The reason for that was when a Whisperer is born, its special light will shine very brightly and the forest will help conceal that light from humans.

When she finally gave birth, it was to a healthy boy with gold special light.

"Is he the one, mother?"

"No. But my first grandchild sure is cute," Mint said fondly at the baby.

When Eri gave birth to twin boys the next time and Mint said none of them was still the boy from the vision, she began to doubt her mother's words. What was her mother looking for?

But when she gave birth to her fourth son, she finally understood.

"Blue lights..." Ikuta, Eri's husband, whispered in amazement.

"Never seen anything like it, right?" Mint smiled. Special lights were usually gold.

"He's sooooo pretty!!!" A fairy who was attracted by the strange light, exclaimed.

"He's different, mother." Eri cradled her son.

"No, not different. Unique."

"Yes, unique. Just like you, mother," Eri said fondly before turning to the baby in her arms. "I think I'll call you...Kazuya."

Mint had watched Kazuya grow up and knew that she had not been wrong. Kazuya was kind and gentle and he had a respect and care for humans that his siblings lacked.

"Hurry up, Kazu!"

"Hikaru nii-chan, wait for me!"

"Um, can I play with you?" A young human boy shyly asked Kazuya.

"No. Kazuya does not need a wimp." Hikaru snorted.

"Nii-chan!" Kazuya glared at Hikaru and when the human boy was not looking, he waved his hand towards his brother's direction. Hikaru immediately dropped to the ground, face first.

"Is he okay?" the human boy asked, concerned.

"He'll be fine. So, let's play?" Kazuya smiled at the human boy who nodded his head, mesmerized.

Sometime later, Kazuya asked Mint why he was different from his other siblings.

Instead of answering him, she told him, "It's time you learned of one of the most sacred powers of Whisperers."

"What is it?" Kazuya asked curiously, immediately forgetting his initial question. Learning about his kind always excites him unlike his siblings who finds it boring.

"The kiss of life."

Kazuya blushed. "I already know about it. Isn't it something we do to mark our partners? Father had already educated us about it along with a few...unnecessary things."

Mint ruffled his hair. "That's when a Whisperers gives it to another Whisperer. But it's different when we give it to a human." Then she told him all about the kiss of life.

"Is that so, Mint? But...why are you telling this to me?"

"Someday, someone important to you is going to need it. And it will seem like a coincidence. When that time comes, your blue dust will affirm it."

Mint knew Kazuya didn't fully understand. But he will, in time.

She stared off at a distance and saw again in her mind a lonely boy with brown hair and expressive black eyes.

Love wouldn't be easy for you, my dear Kazuya. But I know you'll be fine.
