Chapter 11: Guilt and Letting Go

Jin brushed the stray locks of hair that fell on Kazuya's face.

He stayed beside him throughout the night, waking up immediately at the slightest whimper Kazuya makes, caressing his hand and tending to his wounds.

He couldn't help the sob that broke free from him as he watch Kazuya.

Physically, Kazuya was already starting to look better. His wounds were healing and his bruises were disappearing. It was probably because he's a Whisperer that he healed faster.

But even in sleep, it was clear he was not at peace. His forehead was scrunched up and he was whining. His hands were unconsciously hugging himself and he had shifted into a fetal position - all a subconscious attempt to protect himself.

I did this to him.

He wasn't the one who beat Kazuya up but it didn't change a thing. He told him he loved him but at the first sign of trouble, he practically threw Kazuya in the lion's den. He left him to fend for himself for a whole damn week when he clearly knew Kazuya wouldn't fight back. And for what? Just because he found out that Kazuya was a Whisperer. It's not as if Kazuya could help what he was. It's not as if he chose to be a Whisperer.

Why didn't I realize this sooner?

He kissed Kazuya's forehead tenderly before leaving the man's room, his tears falling.

I don't deserve you Kazuya. And maybe Yamapi was right. Maybe you're meant to be with someone else. Don't worry, I won't be selfish anymore. I'll let you go.

---------------------------------

Jin was avoiding him.

That was one fact that Kazuya was sure of.

Sure, Jin still talked to him whenever he would start a conversation and he still personally took care of him but Kazuya felt a sense of detachment in Jin's actions. The Prince would avoid any kind of eye contact with him and he would always try to subtly cut their conversation short.

Is he disgusted with me because I'm a Whisperer? Does he not...love me anymore?

He remembered his days in Lord Ryo's home. Jin had been his life-line, his only reason to survive.

Lord Ryo roughly pushed him towards a man who had a scowl on his face and a long scar on one arm.

"He's our prisoner." Lord Ryo offered no other explanations.

The man he passed Kazuya to simply nodded and pushed Kazuya towards a certain hallway. Servants had no right to question their master.

"You better hurry lad or I'll have to whip you like a horse to make you run."

He tried to keep up with the man's big steps but his legs were obviously shorter so he was panting and wheezing by the time the taller man stopped in front of a door.

The man opened the door and pushed Kazuya inside. The impact made him stumble and fall to the floor. His knees stung and he knew it would bruise.

He looked around the room that was to be his prison for who knows how long. It was a small room, with only a mattress and nothing else. But still it was better than the dungeons.

"It's okay Kazuya. Jin is safe and well. That is all that matters."

After he handed Kazuya to one of the guards, Lord Ryo didn't ever set foot in the room he locked Kazuya in.

The law of Azure states that a Whisperer captured is in the mercy of the one who captured him. So the capturer can kill a Whisperer if he wants to.

That was why Kazuya was expecting that Lord Ryo would kill him. But Kazuya sensed relunctance in Lord Ryo. It's like a part of him didn't want to do what he was doing.

It confused him but he was at least thankful for that. He shouldn't die. If he dies, Jin would as well and Jin is clearly needed by a lot of people.

At random parts of the day, men would enter the room and torture him. Some tried to molest him sexually but his blue lights protected him from them. It was an automatic response. Once a Whisperer had chosen a partner, he could no longer be touched intimately by another.

It was the nights that were hardest. He was already exhausted by then and so when more come to torture him, he couldn't concentrate enough to block Jin from what was happening to him. He knew some of his nights were projected to Jin as dreams.

Of course, he kept waiting for Jin. He would cry out his name in agony. The men taunted him at those times.

"No one will come for you! You're a dirty creature hiding behind a beautiful face and you still believe the prince will come for you? Ha! Dream on!"

Sometimes, he would believe them. Sometimes, he lost hope that Jin would ever want him back.

That was why when he was brought back to the palace as a direct order from the Prince, he was so happy. Jin came for him!

He thought they were going to be okay. Especially when Jin hugged him lovingly the moment he saw him.

And then Jin started avoiding him.

But every night since he came back to the palace, he could feel arms hugging him when he was already fast asleep. He knew It was Jin. He wouldn't mistake his scent for anyone else.

Maybe it was all an illusion?

Of course, he could have asked Jin all the questions bothering him but he was not ready to hear the answers.

If Jin truly didn't want him anymore, at least he could have a few more moments with him. Just a few more days...

---------------------------------

A few more days... I know I have to let him go. But please, just let me have a few more days with him. Just a bit more...

Jin had been watching Kazuya sleep. He had been doing that since the day Kazuya came home. He knew he was acting like a pathetic stalker but it was the only way to watch his beloved without having to hide behind a wall of emotionless masks. This was the only time that he could let his emotions be free, unguarded.

Kazuya whimpered in his sleep.

My sweet angel... He wrapped his arms around Kazuya. It always seemed to calm the Whisperer whenever he did that. Sure enough, Kazuya's breathing evened-out and he was back to sleeping peacefully.

He held Kazuya's hand and whispered. "You will have your freedom, my love. You don't have to worry about anything because I'll take care of it for you."

Tomorrow, at his coronation as King of Azure, he will be given all the royal documents that was prohibited to him before. Included in those documents are all the information and accounts of all the lords in the kingdom. He plans to find a fault in Lord Ryo and his family that could be used to remove the bastard's title. Much as he would like to renounce Lord Ryo without any more reason, it may backfire and affect Kazuya again.

No, he was not taking his chances on Kazuya being hurt again.

He had also already talked to Yamapi. He told him he was willing to let go of Kazuya now but he asked for a favor.

"Good decision. I have nothing against you as a person Prince Jin but you tend to make wrong decisions that tangle Kazuya in them. It's better if you two are apart," Yamapi said frankly.

"I know. After my coronation, you and Kazuya may leave."

"Very well, your highness."

"But can I make a request?" Jin asked in a soft voice.

"Depends on the request," Yamapi answered suspiciously.

"Can you send me a letter about how Kazuya is? At least once a month. He doesn't have to know about it. I just...want to know that he's fine."

Yamapi looked at him seriously. "It's fine with me, your highness. But wouldn't that make it harder for you to move on?"

"Please Yamapi." Being the crown prince, he had never begged in his entire life. But this was important.

"You have my word, your highness."

Jin wiped the tears from his eyes so that he could see Kazuya properly.

I love you, Kazuya.
