Hey Jen. How you’re doing?
Jensen smiles lightly after he read his cell phone message. He excuses himself from the party he doesn’t enjoy anyway and leaves the room to stand on the balcony. The night is clear and only after taking a breath of the cold and crisp air he notices how hard it was to breathe inside. He sighs and opens his phone to read the message again. Then he presses the answer button and stops. He doesn’t know what to write. Jared would discover every lie or untold truth so he can’t just write he’d be fine. But he wants to write at least something. Just to let Jared know he misses him and he is looking forward to see him again. But that might sound a bit cheesy. He just feels… lonely.
He leans on the balustrade and stares in the night. Just less than four hours in this direction is Jared… And he won’t write something sad or cheesy or anything that won’t make Jared smile because he was looking forward to this break for such a long time. This is the first week off since months and Jared left to be with his family, to celebrate a friend’s birthday and just to regain some strength. They all had really tough months of shooting and Jared deserves this time out.
Jensen himself has also this week of. And that’s the reason he’s in Richardson on this party and not at home sleeping which he’d clearly prefer right now. Just sleep till Jared’s back.
But he doesn’t sleep well these days anyway. The nights set in so early and last so long and it’s getting colder every day. But just a few days and Jared will be back. So he just writes: I’m fine. And you? Hope you have fun. Then he sighs and decides to stay here just a few moments longer.

Jared closes his phone and bites his lip. Something is clearly not “fine”. One look at the sky makes him wonder if Jensen’s standing outside right now, too. He closes the front door and sits down on the porch swing. Dude, what’s wrong?

Jensen can’t avoid the small smile which always appears when he reads Jared’s name on the cell phone. But after he read the message he curses inside. Of course Jared notices. I’m fine. Don’t worry. Just tired. How’s the party going?

“Sure, you’re just tired. Tired, my ass.” Jared mutters to himself. He wants to answer but the door opens and two people come outside giggling.
“Oh, Jared. What’re you doing outside? It’s cold and you’re just dressed in a shirt!” His sister and her boyfriend tried to sneak away obviously.
“I’m fine, Meg. Thanks. I just wanted to get some fresh air. I’m done in a few minutes.” Jared closes his phone again and looks at his sister. “Are you two trying to leave early?” He points at them with his finger and shakes it in front of them. “That’s not really polite, you know?”
“Jay, please. Don’t tell mom, but it’s so boring. The punch doesn’t even have alcohol! How are we supposed to make it to midnight?”
Jared smiled. “You’re right. It’s not the most fun.” He leans into her. “That’s why I asked Jeff to fill the closet with the good stuff. You both wanna join?”
Megan’s eyes light up. “Of course, stupid. Why didn’t you tell me before? We’d almost missed the good part!” She turned to her boyfriend. “Come back in. We will finally have some fun in there. Let’s ask the younger ones if they’re willing to join, too. The grown-ups can stay in the living room.”
“Honey, you do realize, that you’re a grown-up yourself, right?”
She just giggles. “We’ll be in the kitchen. Jared, you’re coming?”
“I just have a call to make. Prepare a drink for me. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Megan nods and smiles like she’d know a secret. “Just call. It’ll be fine.”
Jared raises an eyebrow. How did she know? But that’s a thing he can go over another time. Now he really has to call Jensen.

Jensen almost drops the phone when it starts ringing. Just one person in his phone has this ringtone.
“Jay? Why’re you calling? Something wrong?”
“Dude, you were the one with the weird message. What’s going on? And don’t tell me, you’re fine. That’s just not true.”
Jensen sighs soundless. “How did you know?”
“So something IS wrong. I knew it. Jen? Tell me.”
Rubbing his neck Jensen answered. “It’s nothing, really. I’m just tired and this party is so boring. I’d rather...” He forces himself to stop.
“You what?”
“Nothing. Forget it. Enjoy your free time and don’t worry about me. I’m fine. I’ll go home soon and just go to bed. Tomorrow it’ll all look different.”
“You know, you can call me any time, don’t you?”
“Yeah I do. Thanks. Good night, Jay.”
“You, too. Sweet dreams, Jen.”
Jensen hangs up as soon as Jared was done talking. He really doesn’t want to pretend anymore right now. He puts the phone back in his pocket and enters the house again.

Jensen didn’t stay much longer at the party.
Now he was back home in his bed, hugging his pillow. Since hours he lies awake. He’d noticed something at the party. Even if they were all his old friends, he doesn’t know them anymore like he did before the show started. He just felt a bit out of place. And he caught himself thinking, it wouldn’t feel this weird, if Jared was there. Now, tired but not able to sleep, he keeps on thinking about this.
“Dude, I told you to give me a call if something’s wrong.”
Jensen shoots up. “Holy crap, Jay! You want to kill me? My heart almost stopped!” Jensen takes a few steady breaths and notices what just happened. “What are you doing here?”
Jared smiles. “Missed you.”

This night Jensen finally sleeps.
