It's that time of year again...

... namely a) when I come back from the dead LJ hiatus and b) YUUUUUULETIDE! (aka the HAPPIEST season of ALL).
Sadly, RL is still quite busy! Brief catch-up: t-minus 196 days until dissertation submission (...wow, I really didn't need to know that.), what I am doing next specifically is up in the air pending funding decisions which I won't know about until Februaryish, what I am doing next generally is still, "I am going to be a professor when I grow up." Fannishly... well, just before I come back from hiatus, I usually have an intense lurking/fic reading period. In the past, this has been somewhat diagnostic of the next big thing (SGA, SPN/CW RPS, bandom...). This time: Merlin. You heard it here... well, probably not first, but first-ish, anyway. Get in while the getting is good! It is shiny and horrimusing and slashy. As though... I don't know... Xena and Smallville had a baby that was being raised by the good folks at the BBC. Yes.
BUT DUDES, YULETIDE. My assignment = ahahahahaha. On the upside, I think all I'll need will be a general beta. Volunteers?
Most importantly (and belatedly), though, my letter:
Dear Yuletide Author (or whatever title you prefer!),
THANK YOU! I am delighted by the idea that someone out there is writing me a story from one of the fandoms below. I am gleeful! GLEE!
Also, I'm sorry my letter is late! Please don't think that means I don't love and appreciate you, it just means that I have poor time-management skills! *facepalm*
I am a pretty easy-going Yuletide recipient, I think. In general, I like things that are true to their sources. You might think that this is inconsistent with my love of crossovers, AUs, and crack, but no! I love those things because they tend to highlight or focus on aspects of the original source(s). Um. There is a long meta-y tangent there, but I'll stop! The point for you, Yuletide Author, is that something that is true to the original, be it angsty, or funny, or both, is something that I will like. I like gen, het and slash, and all points in-between.
Below are my original requests, with additional rambling from me. Always remember that the details are just suggestions/additional information! I want you write a story that YOU are happy with, but if you're looking for something to jump-start you, read on. :)
I'll also take this opportunity to pimp my requests, both to you, Yuletide Author--obviously we have at least one of these in common with each other, maybe you'd like the others!--and to the peanut gallery who may also be reading this letter. ;)
Across the Universe, Max Carrigan
Details: I would like a story about Max recovering, and getting on with his life, set late- and/or post-movie. Max/Jude slash would make me happy but isn't necessary. I would prefer a happy ending, or a bittersweet but definitely hopeful ending, please. :)
This is a movie musical, using the songs of the Beatles to tell the story of a boy named Jude, and the people he meets, during the 60s. It is pretty both to watch (it's directed by Julie Taymor, who brought the Lion King to the stage with those awesome puppets, and did the movies Frida and Titus. Plus, psychadelia!) and to listen to (... well, a) the Beatles and b) the cast is good!).
I really like the character of Max, and the journey he goes on in the movie. To me, it seems like he starts out one of those larger-than-life and somewhat careless with it types. He's forced through a terrible experience, but he seems to have mostly recovered, although he seems a little quieter and more thoughtful/aware in the end. I think that he loves and is loved by his sister (Blackbird), and he loves Jude (awwww, Hey Jude), however you want to read that. N'aw, Max! *cuddles*
Brick (movie), Brendan Frye/The Brain
Details: I would like a story about Brendan and the Brain, set after the end of the movie. Possibly something about the Brain trying to help Brendan deal with the aftermath. Y'know, in the emotionally stunted way of high school boys, especially high school boys from a noir-esque movie.
I always describe Brick to people in the same way, something like, "You know how sometimes they do Shakespeare, completely straight with the text, but set in, like, pre-war Germany, or the 1970s or something? Brick is like that but with a noir/hardboiled mystery set in a highschool in California." It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and it is AWESOME.
I find it interesting that the only person Brendan seems to kind of almost trust is the Brain, and I wonder why that is. We don't find out much about the Brain, but that stands out to me. It makes me wonder why, and whether that implies some kind of reciprocity, how it would have developed, and how that would play out in the aftermath of the movie, particularly given the power vacuum and hierarchy realignments that must have been part of the fallout.
RPF - So You Think You Can Dance, Cat Deeley
Details: I would like a story about Cat being AWESOME! Um. I suppose, alternatively, a story about how she is MADE OF WIN! Er. Basically, I think she seems like good people, and I would enjoy a story wherein she wanders around making people happy and/or having people make her happy. Yes, this is the sappiest request ever. Um. The seasons I am most familiar with are 3 and 4, and dancers that I enjoyed/found entertaining in those seasons include: Pasha, Anya, Neil, Sabra, Courtney Galiano, Gev, and Mark Kanemura, if you would like to include them.
Heeee. SYTYCD is a guilty pleasure of mine. Basically, it is like American Idol, but with dancing instead of singing. Ah, dancing. Cat Deeley is the adorable host of the show--like Seacrest is to Idol, but blonde and British and AWESOME.
The details from the original request basically cover everything, heh. Cat = kittens, rainbows, etc. Things I enjoy about Cat: her pretty hair! Her crazy outfits! She seems to genuinely care about the dancers! She seems so down-to-earth! Prompt-like ideas: A day-in-the-life! Being den-mother-y to the dancers! Being sex-goddess-y to the dancers! A wacky RPF cross-over! Seriously, go nuts. ;)
Gunnerkrigg Court, Any
Details: I would enjoy basically anything! Annie/Kat femslash = OK! Jones and Eglamore, kicking ass = SWEET! Andrew Smith's strange order-creating power = KEEN! . I would even enjoy a story from the perspective of Boxbot. (Yes, I am TERRIBLE.)
Gunnerkrigg Court is a webcomic about a straaaange boarding school, with alchemy and robots and psychopomps. The first page is here. It is funny and creepy and intriguing--there's an ongoing mytharc--and full of really amazing characters. The world-building is so good, and even the most minor characters are fully realized. I highly recommend it!
When I said basically anything, I really meant it. I just think the setting is so neat! And ALL of the characters are interesting, to me, with the possible exception of the suicide fairies. I'm sorry, suicide fairies! I think that my own approach to receiving this as an assignment would be to pick a supporting character and throw in some backstory, or just a day-in-the-life of them, or one of the chapters from their point of view or something. It is wide-open! :)
I hope that you have fun with whatever you decide to write, Yuletide Author! Thank you very much!
(Edited because I forgot how to make LJ cuts. ETA 2: And links. Sad!)

yuletide
