Room 212, Late Saturday morning

Oct 20, 2007 11:50

Cassandra hadn't left her room since Friday. Too many new people at once, most of them loud in their way. Instead she had decided to work on her reading comprehension some more.

So she sat in the middle of the floor with a book in her lap and a now-cold cup of tea beside her.

The problem with 212, Barbara was finding, was that it was on the second floor. She disapproved heartily of the lack of disabled access in the dorms, so had resorted to the oldest trick in the book.

She picked up a handful of gravel from the path, did a quick calculation to work out which window was 212, and pelted it from outside.

Cassandra looked up from where she was seated, still working with her books, and then stepped to the window. As she peered out she the window, she caught a flash of familiar red hair.

It only took a second to get the window open, and she stuck her head out, "Barbara?" Even having Batman here hadn't led her to expect this.

Barbara grinned up at her, then tried to look stern.

"The accessibility in this town is disgraceful," she says. "I might not come again."

"What are you doing here at all?" Cassandra asked as she climbed partially out of the widnow to sit on the sill and look down at Barbara.

"It's parent's weekend."

Really, that should explain it all.

"I know I'm not actually your parent..." she shrugged. "Are you going to come down or am I going to have to climb a drainpipe?"

"I'll come down," Cassandra half-grinned as she dropped from her window. She landed lightly and walked towards Barbara. "So... um... hi."

"Hi," Barbara said, a full grin for Cass' half one. "How are you enjoying it here?"

Cassandra didn't sigh in relief, but it was close. Barbara hadn'd asked something really hard like "when are you coming back?" or "what do you think you're doing?".

"It's... different. There are so many people here who... aren't like us."

"Most people aren't," Barbara said.

She turned the chair to face along the road, apparently deciding that this can be a mobile conversation.

"You like it, though?"

"I... think I do," Cassandra said hesitantly. "It's... I feel like, maybe, I can be normal. Or... something like it."

"Good," Barbara said, and repeated, "that's really good, Cass. You need that."

"And," Cassandra looked down at her feet as she walked beside Barbara, "I'm learning to read... sort of."

"Really?"

Barbara almost laughed, out of happiness more than mirth.

"That's wonderful! Are you making good progress?"

"Not really," Cassandra shook her head. "But I have help."

"It takes a while," she replied. "Especially for adults. Who's helping you?"

"Katara. One of the other students," Cassandra expanded.

"How... are things back...?" Not "home", not anymore.
