Even though I still don't have a knack for magic---despite how they keep telling me I'm chock full of it--it is what I'd wanted, though not in the same manner I expected. I don't think they likely teach magic at Stall High the way Christopher does, but this seems like it might be better----even though his self-assured attitude sometimes makes me ( Read more... )

You really have a knack for getting hit with these things, don't you, Grant?

I really am happy to be learning magic, or trying, even if I'm sort of no good at it...yet...

I never said it was anything of the sort!

You'll get better at it soon enough. Perhaps we should try more practical things.

Well...well good...then.

What's practical where magic is concerned?

Did you really think I'd forget your name?

Forget theory for now. We'll go out to the forest and try and practice there. Actually making things happen is better than all those books and notes.

Well. I'm not someone important---there was no reason you had to remember.

Oh...well that might work actually. I do like actually trying things out. Just reading about them seems to muddle things up for me even more.

Honestly, Grant, you'd think we weren't friends.

It's a plan, then. We can take Millie and Cat along as well. I promise I won't set the forest on fire.

Well we weren't at the beginning really? Though it helped you saying that you weren't bound to being my rival for choice improver.

...I ...have you done that before?

No one is friends when they've only just met. We were soon enough, weren't we? Though it was rather funny, that, neither of us really wanting the job.

Yes, well, it was an accident. A painful one.

Well, I'm still not wanting it. Though I don't know what to do if Uncle Alfred's been lying...what would he do if I just hopped the train back?

...how many lives did you say you've got left?

I do wonder how you get into things. Your luck doesn't seem all that much better than mine, considering.

You're not going to have to keep it.

And not a thing to do with bad karma, either.

How can you be certain? Maybe Uncle Alfred's forgotten me actually, come to think of it. Though I do wonder who they've gotten to cook for them, however poorly.

[ SILENCE... considering that second statement okay ]

Well, maybe.

Because I'm from later on than you are, and everything mostly goes well. Cheer up, Grant, you're not going to have to be furniture for the rest of your life!

[sighs]

I'll convince you yet.

Mostly goes well?

[ dubious Conrad is dubious and sighs ]

In a way it's better this way. At least if I actually had an evil fate to expiate it wouldn't be so unclear as to what I ought to do next.

Yes, well...you'll see for yourself.

Grant, sometimes I could throttle you. You have no evil fate! And you'll decide well enough on your own what to do.
