The summer of 1999 was the year that they really exploded. To this day none of them really understood how it happened, one second they were playing in local bars and clubs and the next they had a hit single out with an album on the way that fans couldn’t wait to see. Sure it helped that Lilly liked to dress provocatively whilst singing or that Logan enjoyed flexing his abs whilst playing the guitar, but the thing that made them famous was something that they didn’t realise that they had until it was gone. That summer was the first time that their bass guitarist Veronica decided to write some songs. Until that point they had many done covers with Lilly writing a few poppy club numbers that got people on their feet but there was no real soul to that, everyone could tell. Their drummer Duncan had encouraged it, somehow stringing together sentence upon sentence until Veronica had finally caved and holed herself up in her room with nothing but her guitar and a notebook.
Two days later they had three hit songs that the producer who happened to be scouting the bar they played at that night had loved.
It was surreal but their first album was out by the end of the summer and there were plans in the works to tour that year too. That was until the drugs hit. Lilly and Duncan got themselves lost in the world of fame as Logan and Veronica tried to pull them away. The thing that surprised Veronica the most was that Logan never joined them but when she asked she understood. He was four years sober and didn’t want to go back to that life, let alone see anyone else lost to it. In the end they gave up. Lilly and Duncan didn’t want to be pulled away and Logan and Veronica didn’t have the energy to try anymore. Nothing seemed to be able to break into their fame induced, drug filled world. Until the day it was gone.
Like a shadow in the night Veronica left, with no word or warning to anyone but Logan and even then it wasn’t verbal. She left him a note saying that she wished she could stay but she couldn’t, not if this was how it was going to play out. She couldn’t live forever like this. It wasn’t what she wanted. Lilly and Duncan came back slowly, trying to fill the gap, but with Logan so sad that they knew they couldn’t so they gave up, realising their friend to the world, praying he would find Veronica.
Years later in a bar off route 66 Logan was shocked to see Veronica sitting on a stool, microphone in front of her and guitar on her lap, as she sung the words to one of her songs in her beautiful melancholy voice. Taking a seat he waited for her to finish her set before approaching. Tapping her lightly on the shoulder he was surprised when she flung her arms around him holding him close.
“I was hoping you would find me one day,” she whispered in his ear, “So I could make up for leaving you behind.”
“Well it’s a good things that I’m planning to stick around cause I think you’ve got a lot to make up for.”
“I’m more than ok to start now.”
The End.
