Winston was the only thing she had ever found hard to leave. He had been her constant companion for months, the only ears that were around to hear her. He never complained when she bitched about homework, and he never pulled away from her even when she yelled at him for chewing on one of her favorite shirts she left laying on the ground. He would look ashamed and return eagerly to her arms whenever she broke down and apologized for yelling at him.
He watched her pack and followed her out to the car, sitting there, watching her, she felt as guilty as hell for leaving. She explained to him that she was going and that she'd be back and the reason why he couldn't come along. He was a puppy the last time she took him to the city and now he was too big for city living. Sighing she rubbed his back and put her cheek on his shoulder just holding him for a minute.
Handing him over to the cook she gave him instructions before turning and walked to the car. He was just stuff, she didn't need stuff.
That didn't stop her from pulling the car over on the side of the road to cry.
