Do you ever wonder how on earth the supermarkets get so much completley perfect produce? I can't think of a single thing to come out of our greenhouses that could be classified as 'perfect'.

Well done though, looks like you got a lot more than last year?

GM? Or they throw away the odd looking ones.

Thanks. I'm getting a fair amount this year, but my plants have done loads better so I have a fair few to find homes for come the winter. I still have quite a few with fruit on so it should keep me going a while!

Probably perfectly controlled eco-systems and just the exact right balance of sun and nutrients.

I'm sure I read a while ago that they were now growing carrots in vats of feed and chemicals rather than, y'know, all that chaotic soil stuff.

That doesn't surprise me at all. A lot of my chilies end up with a curve because there's a branch underneath them. I should think they employ someone to make sure all the fruit is moved away from any branches to make it too curly :-)

The one successful aubergine grew down into the dirt, and I had to carefully lift it over the edge of the pot.

This growing things lark is haaaard.

I'm concerned for when we have to grow our own food after the apocolypse.

Yep, I honestly can't get my head around how it would be possible. But I guess it hearks back to days when people had like, one cabbage for the family meal at night.

... and when the population was probably a tenth of what it is today.

Because yeah, if we ever need to grow our own food? I think we're pretty much screwed.

The other problem with that is okay, we'd get some food off allotments and out of greenhouses, but that's mostly from what, late July until October? What on earth did people eat the rest of the year?!

Yeah, good point. I don't suppose stuff lasts that long. Does anything grow in this country through the winter? We'll have to rely on old tins of Spam...

Cabbage family stuff will grow over winter. Likewise turnips.

Potatoes might if you can somehow avoid blight, but blight is everywhere now, and I think pretty much unavoidable.

I reckon we could live off potato. Kill a sheep and you're sorted! :-)

Oats apparently grow quite well too. There's probably a reason the national diet of Scotland/Wales was sheep, turnip, and porridge.
