----

It Was Never You

A bright and wonderful morning in Tokyo and everyone is busy with their own businesses. Tokyo is such a busy place and you'd always find people on their phones. For example standing exactly across me is a guy wearing his headphones on and tapping non-stop on his phone but I can't say I'm better than him. I do exactly what he's doing right now. I'm on my earphones with my music at the highest possible volume and I'm constantly on my phone, checking my twitter, Facebook,  instagram and other social networking sites all the time.  Look, the light turned green.

Yamada Ryosuke is a 1st year college student taking up veterinary.  He really loves pets and finds them very cute. He has a petting zoo in his home too so it wasn't hard for him to choose what he wanted to be in life.

"Itai." Ryosuke slightly hissed. A lot of people were crossing the street so it was very packed on the street. You can't avoid getting hit once or twice but this one was quite hard.

"Ah Gomen." Ryosuke looked back and saw the guy he was looking at a while ago. The guy who was across him and he looked very familiar. He couldn't really say because the guy was wearing a mask and shades. The people were pushing so Ryosuke couldn't give a proper response anymore and before he knew it he was already right across the street.

Ryosuke looked back hoping to see him again but he had this height problem and there were a lot of people on the street so he couldn't really see that much.

"Why is he here?." He shrugged the thought off and continued on walking. Maybe he was just imagining things. He was actually on his way to his dorm in the university when he was asked to run an errand by his upperclassman.

The dorm is more like a house actually. The one who owns the place is a rich old man and is one of the sponsors of the university. He has a grandson who is studying in the university and is also living in the house.

"Tadaima." Ryosuke said as he entered the house. He took off his shoes and replaced them with indoor slippers.

"Okaeri Yama-chan." Ryosuke saw his house mate Kei walking down the stairs.

"I can hear your voice up my room and it's in the furthest room on the second floor. You know you should stop wearing earphones. They're making you deaf." Kei scolded him but if looks like he didn't catch what Kei said. "Eh? Did you say something Inoo-chan?" Kei rolled his eyes at him and just left. He won't be able to hear what he says anyway.

"Oh Yama-chan! You're back fast." Hikaru,  Ryosuke's other house mate greeted him.

"I didn't go that far away this time." Ryosuke answered back.

"Well, That's good that you're early. Yabu needs those right now. His cold is getting even worse." Yabu is the grandson of the owner of the house.

It's like a mansion when you compare it to other houses. It has 10 bedrooms with a bathroom on each room and 3 extra bathrooms. It has actually 2 kitchens. One for cooking and another for baking but the two rooms are just found beside each other. The dining is a 14 seater rectangle table and a chandelier hanging above it. There's a living room, library, music room and believe or not there's a theatre inside where all the housemates use once a week as their bonding time together. Outside there's a Garden with a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, ornamental and herbal plants and flowers. And lastly there's a 100 meter swimming pool in the backyard.

"Yabu-kun? It's me." Ryosuke knocked onto Yabu's door. He made Ryosuke buy him some medicine in a nearby konbini.

"Enter." He heard Yabu said. Ryosuke opened the door and saw Yabu wrapped in dozens of blankets and his room was as cold as the north pole.

"Don't you think you should bring up the temperature?" Ryosuke settled down the medicine on the bedside table.

"It helps lower down my fever." Yabu said in between coughs. He didn't know why he caught a cold actually. Well, Yabu is a bit skinny and looks like he lacks nutrition but he takes care of his body well. Maybe it's just stress from school; he is a 3rd year student anyway so it's normal to be very busy.

"I'll go get you some water so you can drink your medicine." Ryosuke opened the mini refrigerator found under the bedside table and grabbed a bottle of water. He opened it up and gave it to Yabu as well as the medicine.

"Thank you." Yabu popped the tablet into his mouth and drank the water. He gave the bottle back to Ryosuke which was already empty and he threw it in the garbage bin.

"I don't even know why I'm the one helping you when your boyfriend's room is just beside yours." Ryosuke was referring to Kei. He and Yabu were going out for 2 years now and their relationship just gets stronger and stronger.

"You know why I can't. I don't want him to catch my cold."

"So you're gonna let your cousin catch it instead?" Yabu's mom and Ryosuke's mom are sisters and their father is the owner of the house. That's why both of them don't pay the rent. They let their grandfather do it, he insists in anyways so how could they turn down their grandfather's offer. Yabu and Ryosuke are his only grandchildren too so he likes to spoil them but he knows when to give them discipline when it's needed.

"Yes I'd rather share my cold with you." Yabu still had the energy to tease his cousin. Ryosuke gave a fake sarcastic laugh and walked out the room but Yabu stopped him again.

"What is it now?" Ryosuke just wanted to jump on his fluffy bed and turn up his tunes. He's tired of doing favors for his cousin who doesn't even repay him back.

"There's a new housemate coming and I told him yesterday that I'll pick him up at the gates of the university at 4pm." Yabu explained first but it was very obvious what he wanted Ryosuke to do.

"Name?" Ryosuke asked after a sigh. He just went out and now he's going out again under the scorching sun.

"Nakajima Yuto." Ryosuke turned back to Yabu and showed him a very surprised and angry look.

"It was grandfather who accepted him. Even I was surprised when he said it to me." He knew what Ryosuke was gonna say so he answered directly. He knew who Nakajima Yuto is and who he is to Ryosuke's existence but his grandfather insisted to take in Nakajima Yuto because all other dorms are already full. Yabu even told his grandfather what happened to them just a year ago but their grandfather didn't listen to him.

"No." With that Ryosuke left his room banging the door close. Yabu could only sigh. He couldn't get out of his room so he just gave Hikaru a call and asked him if he could pick Nakajima Yuto up but like Ryosuke he turned down Yabu's favor.

Hikaru knew what happened a year ago. He was there when it happened. It was always Yabu, Hikaru and Kei who turned up to be Ryosuke's big brothers. The three of them would always protect him since they were just kids. Ryosuke was always bullied when he was in kinder until elementary but the three of them would make sure to take revenge for Ryosuke after.

"I can't even sit up straight how would you expect me to stand up." Yabu sighed and scanned his contacts again. He couldn't ask Daiki because he was busy in his project then he stopped at one particular number and called it.

"Moshi moshi" the other line spoke up.

"Kei-chan? You're my last hope. I know you turned me down earlier but please can you reconsider." Yabu could only hear silence on the other line. He kept praying and hoping that Kei would change his mind.

"Ok." Yabu gave a sigh of relief.

"Thank you."

"Get well soon because you owe me big time for this."

"Sure. No problem." The call ended and Yabu felt like he's getting better.

On the other room Kei was getting ready to leave. He just grabbed his phone and wallet then he left. Kei changed his indoor slippers into his shoes then he noticed one of Ryosuke's shoes were missing.

"Maybe he went out." Kei thought so he let it slip his mind.

He was already getting closer to the university's gate but at the distance he sees someone running towards him very fast then he noticed it was Ryosuke.

"Why are you running." He asked Ryosuke when he was right in front of him. Kei saw him panting very hard and he clutched his chest and shook his head from side to side.

"Hey, are you okay?" He ran his hand on Ryosuke's back and his shirt was drenched in sweat. Looks like he was running for quite a long time.

"Shit I forgot! Where's your inhaler!" Ryosuke shook his head again. Kei assumed he left it at home. Ryosuke has asthma so he wasn't allowed to participate in very strenuous activities. That's why the mansion has a pool to help him in his breathing.

"Come on. Let's go home." Kei made him wrap his arms around his neck and piggy backed him. It was already normal for him to piggy back Ryosuke because when they were young Ryosuke would always disobey and run around the park resulting him to have another attack. But it has been a while since he did this and Ryosuke got bigger so he found a hard time carrying him.

"Excuse me? Do you need help?" Someone from behind asked. Kei gave quite a sigh of relief that someone was nearby.

"Yes please. He's having an asthma attack and I need to-" Kei turned around and was stoned in his place.

"Yuto." Kei slipped out from his mouth. Kei felt Ryosuke breathing easier behind his back but he could hear him coughing. Kei didn't expect that he'll still be like this but the anger still didn't subside inside him. He wants to slap Yuto across his face right here right now.

"Inoo-kun." Yuto was surprised to see him but he got even more surprised when he saw who Kei was carrying behind his back. Yuto took a step forward but then he felt someone jump on his own back.

"Yutti!" Yuto almost lost his balance but he managed to stand back again.

"That was dangerous Yuri! You could've fell." Yuto scolded him as he felt him get down from his back.

"Yuri? Chinen Yuri?" The two of them turned to Kei and just like Yuto, Yuri was surprised to see Kei.

"Inoo-kun?"
  ---------

All of them were gathered in the dining room except for Yabu and Ryosuke. Hikaru, Kei and Daiki were sitting in front of Yuto and Yuri. Daiki is actually clueless of who the people infront of them are so he just remained quiet and let the two talk.

"How long have you been going out?" Hikaru asked the two. Yuto and Yuri didn't give them eye contact because Hikaru and Kei were staring into them like crazy.

"A year already." Yuto answered them.

"So you're saying the day you left Ryosuke is the day you got together?" Kei was starting to get angry. He had great patience but it looks like it was emptying up already. Yuto did not answer this one and it really ticked Kei off.

"Leave. Now." Kei slammed his fist on the table scaring the three of them including Daiki who was still sitting quietly on the side. He was just caught up in this mess. He was busily doing his project when he saw the four of them enter and sat right next to him.

This time Yuto had the guts to look at them in the eyes. He pushed his seat away and stood up. "Fine. I was about to anyway." They could see that Yuto was also pissed but they thought he had no reason to be for he was the one at fault. Yuto grabbed Yuri's hand and dragged him with him.

"Let's go Yuri. I knew that I should've turned down his offer." They were about to exit the room when Yuto bumped into someone on their way .

"You can't leave." A man in his sixties entered and stopped Yuto from taking another step forward.

"Jii-chan." Kei was surprised to see the landlord. They all call him Jii-chan even if he's not their grandfather. They've been close to the family that they also treat Yabu and Ryosuke's grandfather as their own. The landlord doesn't usually come very often. He only visits once a month to check up on things.

"Sit back down. I have something to tell all of you. Call Ryosuke and Kota too." They all followed what the elder has instructed them. Kei went up to Ryosuke's room to fetch him and Hikaru went to Yabu's. Inside the dining room it was very quiet. Kitagawa-san, the landlord sat down at the end of the table. Yuto sat at his right side and Yuri sat beside Yuto. Daiki was still glued in his seat and was very confused of what the world is happening now and before. Daiki just moved in with them 3 months ago so he was very clueless.

"Can't you just tell grandfather that I can't get out of bed!" They heard a commotion outside.

"No! Even Kota is coming and he's really sick! You're just playing so quit resisting because you're getting heavy!" It was Kei's voice they heard this time. It sounds like he's having a hard time bringing Ryosuke in.

"Ryosuke." Kitagawa-san's voice rang throughout the mansion. It was stern and authoritative.

"Coming jii-chan." Ryosuke entered the room with his head held down. He doesn't want to see Yuto or Yuri.  He doesn't even want to be in the same place as them.

"Sit down here." Ryosuke looked at where his grandfather pointed to and it was the seat beside his grandfather, exactly in front of Yuto.

"No need jii-chan. I can sit beside Daiki. I'll be able to hear you from there too." He went to where Daiki sitting and pulled the chair beside it but before he could sit his grandfather called him again.

"Ryosuke. Sit here." He could just give out a sigh. His grandfather is not strict but he knows when to be serious and this the time so Ryosuke knows not to disobey him when he's like that. He pushed back the chair and walked back to his grandfather and sat beside him. He kept his head low to avoid seeing even the fingertips of Yuto but not low enough to see Yuto's feet.

"Where's Kota?" Kitagawa-san asked just in time for Hikaru and Yabu to enter the room. Hikaru was helping Yabu get to his seat which was beside Ryosuke. And because Yabu doesn't want Kei to catch his cold, Hikaru sat beside Yabu and Kei sat beside Hikaru.

Everyone was already present yet Kitagawa-san still hasn't said a word. No one was talking they could only hear Yabu's coughing and sniffing. But what tensed Ryosuke the most is that his grandfather keeps on looking at him and Yuto; moving his gaze between the both of them. Yabu doesn't want to stay here for another second so he decided to ask his grandfather.

"Jii-chan? What are we all doing here?" He asked in between coughs and sniffs. Kitagawa-san sighed then he looked at both Yuto and Ryosuke.

"Ryosuke look at me." He raised his head fast to avoid having contact with Yuto. He directed his attention to his grandfather who was looking at him.

"Yes jii-chan." He showed him a smile but it was totally fake and forced. Under the table Ryosuke was clenching his fists and he tapping his foot on the floor feeling irritated.

"You and getting married in 4 months time."  His smile fell instantly. He wore this shocked face that meant say-it-again.

"Eh? To who jii-chan?" Kei was the one to ask. Ryosuke was still frozen in his seat bearing the same face.

"To him." Kitagawa-san pointed his finger at Yuto's direction and all of their jaws dropped down on the floor. All over them couldn't believe what they were hearing.

"Jii-chan, I can't get married! I'm only 18!" Ryosuke reasoned out.

"Your mom was 18 when she married your dad." His grandfather said.

"But they're both guys! how could you let them marry?!" This time Hikaru tried persuading him.

"They're not getting married in Japan." He had an answer to Hikaru also. They really found no loophole in this.

"But I have a boyfriend." This time it was Yuto who spoke up. All of them didn't need to ask who it was for it was very obvious. Ryosuke was still in his frozen self but he can't say he wasn't hurt by what Yuto said.

Kitagawa-san slammed his hand on the table and gave everyone a jolt. They all sat back down on their seats and kept quiet. He was very serious about this. Probably this was the most serious that he had got.

"Your parents had a partnership with one another." He was referring to Yuto's and Ryosuke's parents. The four of them were the best of friends until now.  Until even after they knew what happened a year ago.

"And so to strengthen the bond of both families, they had an agreement of engaging both of you."

"But jii-chan we don't want to be married!" Ryosuke protested. He doesn't want to disobey his grandfather but he doesn't want to obey him in this situation also.

"You cannot back out in this Ryosuke. Everything is already settled." His grandfather's voice rose and it was not a good sign but Ryosuke didn't back down.

"No! I will not. I'd rather live alone my whole life than being married to him." It was the first time Ryosuke looked at Yuto and it really struck him back. Yuto still looks the same as before or even more handsome than before. He felt his chest tightening but he didn't let it get to him.

"You will follow what I say!" Kitagawa-san was already at his limit. He is already 60 but he still knows how to show authority.

"But as I said sir, I already have a boyfriend and I am planning to marry him." Ryosuke was shocked. He got stoned in his place and he felt like knives being stabbed right through him. He fell back from his seat and hang his head low.

"Then break with him and leave him." Kitagawa-san said it without holding back. He looked at Yuto with threatening eyes but Yuto still stood firm on his place. He wasn't gonna let someone else run his life, not even his parents.

"But I love him sir." They heard someone gasp and they turned their attention to Ryosuke. He still had his head down but you could see him shaking. All of them got surprised.

"Ryosuke?" Yabu tried reaching out to him but Ryosuke moved away. He stood up immediately and looked at his grandfather.

"You can't force us jii-chan. I love you but this is something I can't obey and I'm sorry for that. Please excuse me." Ryosuke forced a smile at his grandfather then ran out the room. Kei wanted to follow him but Hikaru stopped him.

"I think I'll just find another place to stay. It's not good if I'm here." Yuto was next to leaving but kitagawa-san stopped him.

"Your parents already set you here. No other place is gonna accept you." Yuto literally wants to bang his head on the wall now but he just kept it all inside.

"I'll show you to your room Yuto." Kei spoke up them stood from his chair. Yuto called on Yuri and the three of them left the room.

"Jii-chan, you know what happened a year ago right. You know what would happen if Ryosuke sees even an inch of him." Yabu, Hikaru and Kitagawa-san were left inside. Daiki excused himself a moment ago.

"Yes I do know but remember Kota, I am always right." Yabu couldn't say that his grandfather was wrong. All their lives his grandfather always knew what was best for all of them and he was never wrong at it.

"I'll come back next week." With that Kitagawa-san left and Yabu could only give out a sigh. He asked Hikaru to help him back to his room.

"This will be your room. It has a bathroom of its own and a mini fridge." Kei unlocked the room and the three of them entered. It was a very spacious room. It had a king-sized bed in the middle, a television in front and a study table near the bed.

"Can I move my drums in?" Yuto asked. With the amount of space he has he could even put in 2 drums sets.

"Of course not. It's not sound proof here. But you can put it in the music room." Kei explained.

"Wait, you have a music room but you don't have a drum kit inside? Doesn't Hikaru play the drums?" It was just weird to have a music room without drums. The first thing Yuto sees in a music room is always the drums so it was weird for him.

"Ryosuke doesn't want one." Yuto was kind of hurt hearing that. He still couldn't believe Ryosuke hasn't gotten over everything that had happened in the past.

"But now I'm allowed to bring one in?"

"Yes because I'm pretty sure he won't enter the music room from now on." Kei gave Yuto the keys to the room and excused himself. Yuto sighed and fell down his bed.

"Yuto, are you sure you're gonna be fine here?" Yuri sat beside him on the bed.

"Un. I can manage. Don't worry about me." Yuto assured him. He cupped his cheeks and get a peck on Yuri's nose.

"Okay. I'll visit as often as I can." Yuto nodded his head. Yuri went on ahead because he still had a project to finish.  Yuto was left all alone, he was too lazy to unpack so he lied on his bed for a while then he heard the sound of a saxophone. Yuto sat up and looked around. He listened more intently and noticed it came from beside his room. He pressed his ear on the wall to hear better.

"He still plays this huh." Yuto gave a short laugh then listened more. The melody was sad and anger at the said time. Just like it was longing and had a feeling of loneliness and love.

Yuto gave off a chuckle and a bitter smile. "He still loves me."
