Thank you! Castiel's intro scene was one of the best planned and lit I've seen, perhaps ever. So, so, so, many gorgeous icons came from it back in the day. I've gone to that well many a time.
That Sam/Teal'c icon is a scene I've revisited many times, too, but with far less satisfactory results. There aren't a lot of really great Sam/Teal'c bonding moments but this one was epic! I don't know if there was a bulb shortage in Vancouver or what but so many scenes weren't lit -- this one included. I'm a huge SG-1 geek and listened to all the commentaries for the episodes, too. James Tichenor, lighting designer for many years, gives really interesting commentary but I want to beat TPTB about the head and shoulders when he proudly says (more than once), "...and the actors provided their own lighting! That's lit with just the flashlights they're carrying!"
Enough ranting at you. :) Thank you for the lovely comment and I hope you have a great weekend!
I started watching Supernatural at season 6(after I mainlined the previous seasons) so I missed the icons back then because I wasn't in any SPN communities.
Oh me too. I adore Stargate. It will always be one of my favorites.
A lot of the shows have dark or weird lighting for some reason. It drives me insane. (Like Angel or even the first season of SPN and True Blood some of those scenes are so dark it's hard to tell what's going on.)
Castiel's grand entrance is a thing of iconning beauty. *happy sigh*
Agreed on the lighting. I don't know if you're aware, but the lack of color was part of Kripke's vision for SPN, making it stand apart both visually and musically. TPTB at Warner Brothers had something to say about that and SPN got color. It's one of the reasons for the throw away comment in (French Mistake?) from the suit about adding color to the show. :)
But agreed on the lack of lighting. I wonder if maybe lighting in BC is solar powered? In the quest to make their shows visually unique, many shows stray into "OMG, how in the bleep am I going to icon this?!?" territory. Doctor Who took a different road, doing AMAZING things with color. It's a joy to icon. I should sort through my caps some time...
No, I didn't know that. But with Jensen Ackles, I think the show stood apart visually enough without the weird lighting.
LOL! There have been a lot of scenes that I have just given up trying to icon.
Just to let you know, so that I won't spam you to death. I'm going through your journal and snagging some SPN icons. I will of course credit you as they're uploaded.
IKR??? Jensen is his own look (UNF); no need for messing about post-production with the footage. I'm with you on giving up on scenes; over the years, I've had to give up on lots of icons I saw in my head but couldn't make the cap visible without it going noisy and grainy in a way I couldn't believably fix.
Thanks for letting me know. Credit is nice and I think it's the polite thing to do (makes it easy to track down somebody whose work makes you stop and go, "oooooooh") but I don't trawl people's userpics to make certain I've been properly credited. :) I see them go by on my f-list, people comment here, and that's more than enough to make me a happy girl!
Hah! And I started loving SPN less when they embraced the color. I was watching S1 not that long ago and it was so bleak and beautiful. I miss it, and the music to this day.
The bleak look fit the horror premise that SPN used to have, perhaps, but those caps are a bear to work with. Dimly lit and washed out, S1 icons are pages of brown and black with poor image quality. As a fan making icons, I am THRILLED for color. I've been known to pet "Changing Channels" caps on my screen and whisper, "My precioussss" to them
( ... )
I totally get it. If I shot a photo and got that effect (unintentionally), I'd be pissed off. It just worked for the feel of the show and it's probably me associating the change in the show with the change to more traditional colorization when chances are that after a certain point, I would have felt that way anyway. Guilt by association, if you will. ;)
I think it did need to evolve, I just reached a point where their attempts to work on that didn't sell for me - spending half a season hoping it'll get better isn't as enjoyable as groaning about racist trucks and magic dawn. :)
I've snagged the Castiel icon (I don't think I've ever seen one quite that stunning before). And the Teal'c/Sam icon, I'll credit as they're uploaded.

But I'm a non-iconning weirdo.
