ok, so here's my TMV review. it's insanely long, i don't blame you if you don't read it, but oh man. such awesomeness.
how should i even begin to explain the craziness and amazingness that was last night, i guess i'll just start at the beginning.
i got to the fillmore around 5, traffic was crazy light, i expected it to be worse, but most people work in the city and go home, not the other way around. this was actually the first time i had decent directions to the fillmore, i always get lost on geary because i drive under the bridge and yea. there was only maybe 20-ish people in front of me, i didn't know what any of the comatorium board members looked like, so i pretty much was on my own, which kinda sucks, since who wants to go to a concert as a lonely loser, but it seems i do. but back on track, i brought a james patterson book i'd yet to read to give me something to do in line, since the doors weren't supposed to open until 7, and when does anything ever get done on time in a concert setting. so i sat on the fucking freezing concrete and tried to read my book, but it was just not possible. the really cool kids behind me were drinking out of their pepsi bottles like the classy people they are...it's as bad as bringing vodka in a waterbottle. so the people in front of me were having some sort of reunion, since they realized they were all from visealia, small world i suppose, funny how they never met but became instant friends in line. waiting in line was boring as all hell, and people were trying left and right to buy tickets from scalpers since the show was completely sold out. so i finally get inside and i was the second person from the barrier, so it was pretty cool, except i of course had to be behind this guy who was around 6' tall. that rules when i'm only 5'2" and trying to see around him. i ended up next to these two chicks, christine and bernadette and they were cool, we talked about music and shows which was nice, i didn't feel so out of place. i got the guy next to me to hold my place and i went to the merch table to try and buy a sweatshirt for me and this guy because i told him i would, but i was able to buy myself one, but they were all out of his size, which i felt bad about, but didn't want to spend $35 on something this kid couldn't wear. so i finally work my way back to the crowd and the nice boy was still holding my spot, so i got to be back behind the tall kid and i waited for the show to begin.
the opening band came on, they were called "Kill Me Tomorrow" and it was quite the interesting band. 3 members, a guitarist, drummer, and chick bassist who was very beautiful. the drummer stood the whole time, which was interesting, and also he and the bassist faced each other, not the audience...i couldn't really understand what they were saying...ever, but it sounded kinda cool. i felt bad for the bassist since some guy kept shouting, "hey bassist! you're hot! marry me!? the chick bassist!" yea, it was annoying. so they played for 30 minutes and it was interesting how the guitar had the rhythm and the bass had the melody lines, since it isn't always done that way. but they were ok, interesting...i don't quite know how i could classify them...prog rock, punk, melodic only sorta? well, onto TMV.
so for about 30 minutes people were setting up for the TMV set, and i was slowly pushed further and further forward, so that was pretty rad. since breathing in someone else is just...awesome when you don't even know their name. i saw someone setting up conga's so i knew marcel was going to play, which would be interesting, since i'd never seen him. i had heard that they were not going on until 9:15, and when 9 o'clock rolled around we were all so fucking smashed into one another i was quite pleased to hear the intro to the music that they walk in on, because i don't know how much more pushing anyone would've been willing to endure without the band even being on stage. so they came on stage, and everyone was cheering and it was pretty cool, right away they opened with "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)" and everyone went fucking crazy. during the exoskeletal junction at the railroad delay part, cedric just held the mic out to the audience and everyone was so loud, it was actually really cool. i've never seen anyone channel music the way that i witness cedric and omar channeling it. it was as if...he had to dance and move around stage and just wailing and screaming and throwing the mic around and singing, it was just as if this music was flowing from him, seeping out, and needed a release. it's hard to explain, but it was insane to witness. makes you wish you could salsa dance and be in as good shape as he is. roulette didn'tlast for too long, maybe 10 minutes or so, they do these awesome jam interludes, and you just watch omar's fingers fuckin fly over the neck, and it's so fun to watch ikey, because he gets so into it, and most people are so busy paying attention to cedric and omar that they don't look at everyone else, but ikey was totally grooving to the music, and jon's drumset was so cool...i'd never seen a clear set before, and he and juan were also insane. then came "Drunkship Of Lanterns" whihc everyone kept being insane for, there was people being passed overhead because they needed to get out, that was nice, they kept kicking me in the head, and breathing at all was insanely difficult because everyone was so packed, i honestly though my ribacge was just going to cave in. there didn't seem to be a lot of people singing, which was disappointing, since i like to sing all the lyrics, and then fake it when i don't know what the fuck is going on, just because it adds to the fun of the show. then really really awesome, they played "Concertina" from the tremulant cd, and the people who recognized it were so pleased, i didn't recognize it, since i'd only heard the song once, but i'd heard of it quite a bit, and that was cool, i don't have any strong recollections of it because i didn't recognize it, but i'm sure if i heard it again it would jog some sort of memory. maybe. then came the best part, "Cicatriz ESP" so far on the tour they've been taking 20-ish minutes to totally jam this song out in the middle and do such insane crazy shit, but oh fuck, this song lasted for like 45 minutes. 45 minutes of pure amazing music. there was like a 10 minute intro and i knew it was coming since cedric kept repeating "do you recall my name/does it echo in your veins" and i just knew, but then they started cicatriz and a lot of people were singing, which was awesome, and then for about 30 minutes in the middle of the song, they just jammed, and cedric was using his microphone to hit the cymbals, and then the fucking best part of the WHOLE entire night, cedric started to sing "baby's on fire" and he just repeated the phrase "baby's on fire" like 5 or 6 times over a 5 minute time span, and it was amazing because he went into a verse of the actual song, and i fucking love Velvet Goldmine like there is no tomorrow, so actually hearing cedric sing it was just amazing. i don't know if anyone else caught it, i'd like to think they did, but i was definitely appreciative. the length of cicatriz was just mindblowing and i loved it, the only not good part was that cedric jumped onto the barrier during cicatriz, and that would've been awesome had everyone not fuckin bum rushed the stage, my glasses almost broke a few times during that span, it was kinda scary, everyone was falling one way or the other. i was glad they went into "Televators" after, because everyone mellowed out and just sang and it was just...beautiful. it's such an awesome song, and everyone knew the words and that ruled. then they went into "Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt" and that was insanity. not only is the song fucking amazing but just hearing it performed live, and cedric was dancing and it was so awesome. the left in the middle of take the veil, and it was just juan on stage jamming for about 10 minutes, and everyone was cheering and yelling, and they came on and finished the song, and it was so awesome, i saw marcel salsa dancing which was adorable, and everyone was just insane about this song, and it was awesome, and then it was over.
i don't know what will top this, but m5 in two weeks. i'm excited.
