A very amusing day or 2...

Jan 12, 2006 22:08

So Wednesday I'm on call.  Me, Eva, Ralph and Dr. Nord.  Uh oh...  The day wasn't all that bad.  No pages.  Well there was a page from Mary Anne...  Asking what the printer toner was.  She's like don't let the librarian know.  Lol.  But that morning, I had decided to bring my toner from home.  I told Eva about it.  Dr. Nord knew about it.  But then I'm like tagging along with Eva, doing various things, FUing stuff...  We're in the file room.  I see the printer.  Hm...  We can just take the toner...  But then again I brought mine.  So Dr. Nord asks us how we're gonna print out the list, does anyone have a home to go to, etc, etc.  We both live too far, but I have my toner, etc, etc.  But then I told him about what I'll now refer to as "plan b"...  Ok, so we sign out.  Dr. Nord still had x, y and z he still had to do.  For any other resident we'd be like see you for dinner.  But we went with Dr. Nord and Ralph to...  Geeze, I don't even remember what we did.  Oh yeah, we were in the er for a person who had bleeding post an elective TOP...  We updated the list, added a few people.  I get my thingy from the car.  Pop it in...  Too big...  Ugh.  So me and Eva decide to put "Plan B" into effect.  We cram the library toner into a plastic bag I brought.  Leisurely walk to the file room...  We spot Ralph on the phone.  Walk by and smile.  Exchange the cartridges...  Run out of the file room, past Ralph, who basically wants to know why the hell we're cracking up / running...  I was laughing so hard I was like gasping for air and almost fainted.  Anyway, Ralph pretty much figured out what we were up to.  So we print the list and I casually switch the toners back.  I even walked passed security guards making their rounds.  Lol.  Anyway, we reround shortly after around 12...  We show Nord the list.  So your toner worked?  No.  Plan B.  OMG!!!  You better put it back.  We were like we did.  And it had to stay between the 4 of us cause it's gonna happen again.  True...  Either that they'd top us, somehow.  Anyway more changes...  So we finalize the list for that night and do the whole switching thing.  But at this point I was off the rush and into my...  I don't think we should do it...  We should at least ask permission...  I mean, Dr. Nord was like they use that printer at all times, hurry up...  I mean, I think our surgery list is as important to patient care as radiology reports are.  So getting a toner is priority in my opinion...  Anyway, around 2 we slept.  Yeah...  Late nights with Dr. Nord.  Wake up at 5:15.  Lol.  At one point, Dr. Nord comes in and I guess notices Eva and I occupying the beds.  Woops.  I hope we didn't piss him off.  I mean, he had a worse day / night compared to us.  Constantly being paged for crap consults cause medicine is too stupid...  And Nord is too nice.  Adams keeps telling him to be frank with them, don't consult us if you, 1.  Haven't seen the patient and 2.  Don't know anything about them.  Having previous surgery doesn't constitute a consult.  Then the thing was they were consulting us on a patient we previously followed.  That we signed off on.  Had a CT which showed lung and no abdo pathology.  Wrote it's pleuritic and not surgery.  Get a request for a consult with the same complaints, even post a 2nd CT with the same results.  All because they didn't read back in the chart to see what we wrote.  Basically long story short...  No continuity of care on all levels.

Good God...  My funny story of burglary turns into a lecture...  Who am I lecturing???

Anyway, so after round, prior to GI rounds...  I motion and whisper to Eva I'm upset Adams didn't comment on our list, to which he asks what we did...  I'm all smiling...  We're like we can't say, but you'd love it, be impressed, we deserve props, etc, etc.  I'm like all I'll say is "plan B."  Eva was like we'll tell you in private cause if it got out, we could be expelled.  Hell yeah.  Anyway, before anyone shows up and Adams gets a breakfast table, she's whispering to him what we did.  I mean, yeah we did it...  But I hope I got credit as being the master mind.  Haha...  Little innocent me coming up with that plan.  I'm a little trouble maker at heart...  Hehe.  Anyway, he later said we all deserve Cs.  To which I say, can I at least get a C+.  He's like sure.  Yeah!

Oh yeah, did I mention I was spotting HP laser printers / toner all over the place?  Then Dr. Adams was like nothing will top him crawling through the window into the librarian's box.  Lol.  This was before we told him what we did.  His plan is to steal a toner off the floors.  I don't think it's the same.

Since I no longer feel like writing...  You know what time it is...  Random notes time!!!  Yeah!!!

I got my Show People magazine in the mail.  Freaking 3.95.  So I saved 80 cents...  Anyway, they asked people what Juke Box musical they'd like to see.  Some guy was like Cat Stevens.  He wrote because he's a Muslim now and into Islamic music it probably won't happen.  That is a legitimate reason.  I must add...  Although I think he's a great writer / songs and everything...  I guess his little time on the scene...  I don't think he has enough of a following to make it successful.  Also, along with the change in religion.  Like he didn't want Father And Son to be in Moulin Rouge cause he didn't agree with the premarital sex, etc, in the movie.  Then he no longer likes some of his songs, one namely being about premarital sex (The Boy With The Moon And Stars On His Head.)  Anyway, yeah, I could so see his music as a musical.  I'd love to see it as well, but it's never gonna happen...  Well maybe if 7500centfish does what she visualizes.  Some unforbidden romance between a PETA person and a member of the NRA.  With Austin Powers overtones.  Lol.

I hear NJ banned indoor smoking.  Thank God!  Who wants to go to AC???

So Dr. Nord was on call right.  Well he got in late.  They call him.  The accidently get a hold of Dr. Gabriel, the head surgeon guy.  Everyone burst out laughing, Yelling is trying to apologize.  Nord walks in the middle of this.  LOL!!!

I showed Eva all the pics on my Palm.  Basically all I have is epocrates, which is free cause I'm too stingy to pay for anything.  Q for the LJ / xanga peeps.  Is Harrison’s a 1 time thing or do you have to update yearly?  I mean, I'm willing to pay x amount if it doesn't disappear if I don't pay the next year.  But if I have to pay all the time to keep the info, I wouldn't invest in it...  Anyway, I even told her the price.  She's like so you paid x bucks for a PDR...  I mean, yeah I have my problems with it, but I use it for more than a PDR.  I mean, it's my organizer, my note pad, etc, etc.  I mean, I'm not trilled with it, but it's more than a PDR...

In the whole pic thing.  Pics of Italy, the Vatican.  Eva was like you take your Catholicism seriously.  Chris comes out of his studying zone and says, "You're Catholic?  I didn't know that?"  I mean, I know they're not all Catholic.  But seriously...  How many Filipino non-Catholic are there?

I'm the hospital key stealer.  One morning I ask 4 east for the key to the clean supply room.  Go back on the floor a few mins later...  Where's the key?  I put it back and I saw it there...  Did I just put it there?  No.  Are you sure?  Yes...  Anyway, ER.  We did an I&D, needed some supplies from this locked thing.  Get the keys, pop them back.  Etc, etc.  Dr. Nord gets paged.  He pages me.  I go to the ER.  I say I put them in the drawer.  Open it up.  They're gone...  I say I know I put them there.  Eva is like dragging me out.  I was willing to stay and look for them.  Anyway, we continue to update the list.  I'm in the CCU.  Supposedly there was an overhead page.  Eva calls.  Gets screamed at.  I get paged. Call back.  I say again, I'm positive I put them back.  Later we're called to the ER to do an H&P.  I'm scared they didn't find it.  No one said anything.  I didn't ask...  So I don't know if they found them.

While we were there...  I was waiting for Eva to finish a consult.  Some EMT comes in.  Filipino...  Reminded me of Mark.  OMG...  The feelings came back.  I mean, if I saw him...  I'd be giddy, even with all I know about him and Ploy...  Yeah...  Best to stay away.

Lol.  Eva didn't annoy me at all yesterday.  Well there were a few things, which I guess I'll mention now, or I'll forget.  Uh...  I forgot...  Oh yeah, I mention to her what they told us at Kings country.  We're not allowed to use...  Ø as she pronounced Theta cause medicine is based on Latin and theta is a Greek symbol.  Therefore using no is more accurate cause no is from Non, which is Latin.  So I ask Eva this she basically bites off my head and say it's not theta it's null.  Sorry...  That's the last time I try to have a convo with her about Greece.  Sorry for my ignorance.  Can't think of anything else.  Anyway, we both said we were gaseous...  Which is TMI...  Uh...  She comment my shoes are too girly.  They are grey with pink trim.  I'm too tough for pink in her opinion.  I don't remember what else.

Breakfast with Dr. Adams turned into politics. Well kinda.  He previously mentioned after surgery he thinks he'll go to law school.  Yale to be specific cause they seem to be popping out politicians, which he'd like to get into.  Reasons for leaving surgery...  He's seen how you get when you're 70 and still operating.  Anyway, that turned into he wants to socialize medicine.  Most of it was way over my head...  Eva mentions something about look at Greece.  They're not totally socialized, but basically there is nothing.  Sure you're seen but they can't do anything for you.  There are like 4 dialysis facilities in the country, etc, etc.  But Adams was like is it really worth dialyzing, say a 90 year old person, or even treating them, when in all likelihood they'll die.  He then asked us what is the 5 year survival rate of someone on dialysis.  We didn't know.  Look it up.  I just did.  About 30.  Wow...  Anyway his whole thing is money is being wasted here and there.  Then Eva was like her father this and that.  We're still paying 15 years after the fact and they aren't badgering us which is good.  He had this stuff done to him even when it prolonged his life for 2 years, etc, etc.  Then he was going into so someone needs liver surgery.  In reality maybe 15 people will do it all over the US at 1 time, so even though it is available, you'd probably have to travel.  It's no different than flying a person to a different country in Europe.  Anyway, it was far to over my hear and I'm probably making a fool out of myself cause I have no clue what I'm actually talking about.

Haha...  So in the Er, Ralph uses his stamp and stuff.  I mentioning I thought of getting myself a stamp that said MSIII just to be dorky.  Laughter from all.  Hehe.  I got it today.  It's one that I can change when I become an MSIV, etc.  I won't actually use it though.  I wonder what they'd think...

Dr Nord and his consults.  So they pop in a central line.  Actually Ralph did.  He takes a big bite when he's suturing it into place.  Nord is like did you hit the aorta?  He was actually paranoid he did, plus the fact, when they were done, from being tachycardic her HR was like 24...  Dr. Nord had a consult to do on her for LLE ulcers.  He was dillydallying with it and hoping for a code.  He mentions this to Ralph.  He's like what code.  I'm laughing.  Mentions I'm quick.  Anyway, he was hoping she'd die so he won't have to write up the consult.  Then later he asks the date for Friday.  The 13th.  He takes no note of it.  I then ask him...  Are you on call?  Maybe even worse luck.  He tried to break the Elizabeth curse, which I don't think was done.  But he did say he's had worse nights.

Home.  Slept.  Dad woke me up.  Eye appointment.  He said it would be like 2 hours so I bring stuff to study.  Step 2 qs on surgery.  I'm like...  This had nothing to do with abdo path, chole's etc...  Trauma???  Oh yeah...  Peninsula doesn't teach trauma...  Anyway, after Dad went in I thought I should have went as well.  He mentioned I should have went too, cause he had no clue what they said to him.  I kinda wanted to go to see if I can learn anything.  See if they'd noticed I stamped myself MSIII.  There were all MDs after all.  What are the different eye "doctors."  I mean, I know there are the people who test your eyes for glasses.  Surgeons.  Do you have to go into general surg first.  What else is there?  God...  I can't imagine going to medical school just for that.  Plus eyes are just gross...

Sorry for jumping.  Friday the 13th...  Last day of black for me.  Woo-hoo!  I should be sad though...

Obi said he had ObGyn after surg at Brooklyn hosp.  WHAT!?!  So I email my advisor to see if I can get it.  I then get an email from Wyckoff confirming my electives.  Oh well.  I'm ok with that now.  So...  Endocrinology for 2 weeks.  Nephrology for 4, then Cardio for 2.  No breaks till April 28th.  Fun fun...  but then again, I hear Wyckoff electives are cake.  Lectures, no patient contact.  Which in a sense will be very boring, but 2 hours a day, for cardio I hear.  Learn EKGs really well.  Haven't heard about the others though.

I don't know how true it is...  I mean, it seems like at least with the rotations I've been on, maybe more having to do with the hospitals, it seems like I have had more hands on experience.  I mean, all I have is Jennie to compare it to, where she said she had no hands on.  I mean, I drew blood, popped in an ng tube, attempted a foley...  IVs, etc, etc.  Interacting directly with attendings, doing the job of an intern.  I mean, even in peninsula.  I see students just standing around listening to the ER doc, while I'm scrounging around for stuff for an I&D.  I mean, I guess people will say I'm being a scut monkey...  But I don't mind.  As long as I don't have to transport people...  If scutting around for supplies means I can help out with an I&D, I'd do it.

I'm worried...  I have like a rash...  Bumps or something... At first I saw these 2 little bumps, side by side.  Probably an insect bite of some sort.  Paid no attention to it really.  Now...  I've got them all over my butt...  I'm worried it's infectious...  I only noticed them after I slept in Peninsula.  First in the intern room, then in the resident room.  I wonder if any one else has them.  Then if so...  Why would they be on my butt, which is covered with clothes and not else where???  I popped some hydrocortisone on it, cause no matter what is it, there is inflammation.  Hurts like a mother...  Freaking itches like hell too.  Good God I hope it doesn't spread elsewhere...

Oh yeah, another Q Eva posed to me...  If I could kill anyone on the rotation who would it be.  Honestly even thought she doesn't annoy me so much now, I was thinking Eva.  Then...  OMG...  Obi drives me insane.  I told her of his questioning.  She's like Dr. Barbosa said this and that.  His note said b/l intake of air auscultated.  What?  Uh... That he purposely shows up to sign out late in the hopes that they pass his patients.  That Adams makes faces...  Seriously, I wonder how he's made it this far.  Where does he go...  She then asked who would I cuddle with.  None of the boys.  Then not really any of the girls.  I just said either her or Ploy, in a completely non sexual way.  And I wouldn't even cuddle cause I'm not the type...  Anyway, if I needed to share a bed, I would.
