A Special Day with the Cherry Blossoms

Apr 05, 2007 18:24

It's that time of year, so once again the bento was packed and off we went to DC to spend the day under the cherry blossoms. I've put just six of the 34 pictures below. If you'd like to see the rest, they have their own gallery in my scrapbook. http://pics.livejournal.com/isabeau_gower/gallery/0001126y

a close up of the flowers that were over my head This year, hubby and I were so happy because our friend tigerblak was able to take the day off of work and join us on our pilgrimage to the sakura. We made tons of food and loaded the bento boxes and cooler and headed out via the metro to the Tidal Basin.

closeup of a small cluster of blossoms We arrived around noon and walked part way around the loop with a little side detour to see the river trees first and then found a great spot to set up our little camp.

the older trees form a tunnel over the sidewalk on the north side of the basin As usual, I made too much food. (Going to plead my Alsatian ancestry on that one.) Grilled rice balls, sweet rice balls with currants, soy sauce eggs, spicy peanut noodles, simmered kabocha, shirataki with five spice powder, and three kinds of tsukemono: lotus root in soy and ponzu, bamboo shoot in white miso and mirin, and daikon with dried apricots in sweet and spicy vinegar.

branches full of petals twist and turn in interesting ways We ate and talked and then I tried to write a little, while tigerblak read and the hubby took a nap.

peak bloom day was as perfect as the blossoms themselves About four o clock we started walking and spent the next three hours looking at the trees and taking loads of pictures. I've loaded a few of the best that we took with the digital camera. I still haven't gotten the print film developed so you may well all get another photo spam when they come back.

there are many different kinds of sakura at the tidal basin, but they're all something special I hope you enjoy the pictures. For me they are great memories of a wonderful, magical day. This was my fifth year under the blossoms and I'm already looking forward to next year's adventure.
