It had taken two days of begging from Tom before Ben would consent to taking any painkillers, despite the blinding agony in his back.

He can sleep now, which is a blessing that can't be discounted, but he's unnerved by the dim haze the morphine puts him in. He has the constant, disturbing feeling that he's going to wake up one day, completely lucid, and be horrified at what he's done and said.

But at least he can sleep.
