Room 214: Sunday Morning

Jul 08, 2007 22:28

After her long and arduous journey from Kaitain to Earth Irulan, her headdress and her floating luggage entered her room. She was tired and emotionally drained that all she managed to do was push her luggage through the door and say, "I'm back."

After a handwavey phone call from Irulan, Evie bounced down the stairs and over to 214 before heading out to flag football. "You're back! You're back you're back you're back!"

Startled from her packing she watched with amusement as Evie bounced into her room, she could have sworn she'd only put down the phone a few moments ago.

"Yes, I am." she said with a smile.

Evie threw her arms around Irulan and hugged her, then backed up a step, still holding onto her arms, and bounced. "Oh, splendid! I missed you! So much has happened! Well, not really, but it seems like it!"

Coming from months of no physical contact the embrace startled Irulan but she quickly hid it, very much glad to be in the presence of a friend.

"I have missed you too," Irulan said and squeezed Evie's arm warmly, "what changes have occurred while I was away? How long was I away in this time?"

"Six weeks. No, seven! It's July 8th, you just missed the Independence Day celebration here by a few days. Oh, and we've had two new sessions of new students arrive! Some of them are quite nice, I think you'll like them." Evie beamed at her, tilting her head. "How long was it for you? Did you have a good time? How is your father? And your sisters?"

"Six weeks?" Irulan tilted her head, not that long then, good. "In my time I have been gone for three months and I will take your word about the new students." She carefully pulled her headdress from her head, "All my sisters are well although I have hardly seen them."

She deliberately left her father out of the her discussion.

"What did you do? Did you go anywhere interesting? Or did your, umm, Order, did they have you studying the entire time?" Evie sat down on the bed, bouncing a little. "Oh! And I'm on the flag football team! We play today!"

"I went to a lot of places, the Reverend Mother seemed to think I wasn't receiving an education here," she didn't not attempt to hide the note of exasperation in her voice, "Oh and I also met the Duke Atreides' son--" Irulan frowned, remembering something vital about Evie, "wait, what is a flag football? Is it safe?"

"It's a game! It's marvelous fun. Two teams, scoring goals with a ball. And it's no-contact, except for throwing the ball. And catching it," Evie said, trying for reassuring. "We don't even wear protective equipment! Really!"

Like anyone who knows Evie will find that a good idea.

"No protective gear?" Irulan focused on the one subject that was really important. She wondered how Evie meant that as reassurance. "Perhaps you'd like to wear my shield?"

"Well, that wouldn't quite be fair to the other team, would it?" Evie paused. "Hmmmm... ahem. Anyway! So? What is Duke Atreides' son like? Did you like him? Or was he horrid?"

It was true, it would hardly be fair, still since she's heard of the game Irulan might as well see what it was like in her own eyes. She might just be needlessly paranoid.

"What to make of Paul Atreides?" Irulan mused and remembered their all too brief conversation, "He is a bit of a... what was your Earth term? 'Drama queen'."

"Oh, dear," Evie said in dismay, then giggled. "What was he being dramatic about? Was it *very* tiresome, or only moderately so?"

"Well," Irulan said, hedging, "he did under go an unexpected test and his whole family is being banished to Arrakis, which by the way, maybe the universe's wasteland but its also our treasure but I don't see why he had to be a brat with me."

Yes, she really does seem to take offence about that.

"Ohhhhh. Boys," Evie said, shaking her head. "But at least he wasn't personally declaiming and pouting at you. Why are they being banished? Did the Duke offend your father? That seems a bit harsh, really." She cocked her head. "Did you like him, in spite of that? The son, I mean. Paul?"

"It's meant to be both a punishment and a reward. Duke Atreides is one of the most upstanding man in the Landsraad I know but... it is very complicated situation." She said trying a way to think of, wait-- "Me? Like Paul Atreides? Mr. Gloom and angry Atreides? Of course not! He was rude and dramatic! And he's short!"
