It was nearly dusk when Erza climbed up to her window. Sachiko was used to the company, and in the warmer months she'd taken to keeping her window open -- both for the air and in preparation for visits from Erza.
It was the timing that struck her as off, and the odd silence that seemed to settle over Erza like a shroud. She'd been very quiet for the past week or so, answered questions in clipped, monosyllabic responses, and rarely asked any of her own. She was almost...melancholy was the first word that came to mind.
"Erza?"
Erza glanced up, and Sachiko resisted the urge to glance away. When Erza stared at her that way she felt strange and out of place in her own skin. There was a tingle that started at the base of her spine and moved up, set her nerves alight.
"Sachiko." She inclined her head, and her bangs dipped forward in front of her eyes.
Sachiko's fingers twitched. "It's good to see you."
"Mm."
"You usually show up earlier." She was trying, perhaps a little too hard, to keep conversation going. Erza's mood was beginning to frustrate her. "Was today busy for you?"
"I've been thinking." Erza slid off the windowsill in one easy, graceful movement. Sachiko's gaze immediately went down to the floor, which wasn't the best idea. Erza was wearing those...leather boots and the skirt was (entirely too) short. Mentally, she began counting. It was as if Erza sprung, fully formed, from one of those romantic novels she was so fond of. With some effort, Sachiko's gaze tilted back up to Erza's face. The sunlight painted threads of orange and gold through her bright hair, turned her eyes soft. She was beautiful, Sachiko thought. She wondered if Erza knew how beautiful she was. That at moments, the slightest tilt of her head or the way light caught the angles of her face would make Sachiko's breath catch in her throat. It was almost painful to look at her sometimes, to be in the presence of someone so lovely, so desired. Someone she would never have.
"About?"
Erza took a few steps forward, and Sachiko hesitated, then took a single step back. There was something in Erza's expression that alarmed her. "About us."
"Us?" She blinked, affected an expression of confusion, in part because she was confused. What had gotten into Erza? "I'm afraid I don't know what you mean." There was a change in Erza's face again, and she suddenly reached out, too fast for Sachiko to react, and grabbed her wrists.
"How long do you mean to keep doing this?"
It felt like ice had pooled in her veins. Sachiko thought to struggle, but the feverish quality of Erza's eyes gave her pause. Her voice sounded far away to her own ears, as if through a vacuum of sound. "I don't...I don't understand what you mean." She tried to wrench away from Erza's hands now, but the redhead's grip was too strong. "Erza." She paused, then repeated the name, firmer. "Erza, let me go." And finally, as a last resort: "You're hurting me."
Erza's eyes narrowed, and she moved forward, pushing them both back. Her grip on Sachiko's wrists did not loosen. "You understand perfectly. Don't play at being stupid."
Some of the fire came back to Sachiko; color rised in her cheeks. "I beg your pard--"
"You understand. Just as I do. So, how long, Sachiko? How long do you intend to continue denying yourself? Denying me?"
"I--" She couldn't breathe. "Erza, please. Let me go. You're not--not thinking properly. Just unhand me, and we can...we can talk about this. Please." Don't make me say it.
"I could leave at any moment." Erza shifted forward, and rested her head against Sachiko's shoulder. Her voice was soft, but firm. And angry. "You could blink and I'd be gone. And you would choose this."
Sachiko flinched. She'd heard those words before, but not from Erza. Never from Erza. "I--of course I wouldn't! Why would you say such a terrible thing?"
"It would be easier than facing your feelings, if I left." She was so close now that Sachiko felt her lips brush against her earlobe. "I could leave at any moment, or you could...could leave me. Do you want to have those regrets?" Erza released Sachiko's wrists, finally, and went to wrap her arms around her.
"I..." Sachiko closed her eyes, and whispered, "I can't." But she shivered when Erza kissed her neck, and tilted her head back. She dimly registered Erza speaking, somewhere beyond the haze of growing passion.
"Please."
And Sachiko found that she couldn't deny her, not when she asked like that.

"Ah. The roses are wilting."
"Huh?" Utena glanced up from her teacup, mouth covered in cookie crumbs, to regard Anthy, who looked oddly content. "It's almost winter, so I guess so. It's kinda sad."
"Many things are transient." And then, "Your tea will get cold."
"Oh, right."
