Dissidia is so awesome. *___* In addition to Warrior of Light and Cecil I've now tried my hand at playing Cloud, Tidus, Firion and Squall. I decided to go through every character according to the difficulty listed in Destiny Odyssey in story mode.
It also makes sense because while the stories for the characters weave in and out of the stories of other characters, the timeline, I've found, goes roughly according to the difficulty from easiest to hardest. When I completed the Warrior's part of Destiny Odyssey I was surprised to find out that every other good guy had obtained their crystal before him. It was the first part of the story I completed. So yeah, it was a bit confusing.
Tidus plays like a dream. He's really quick (although not as quick as Onion Knight. I haven't played him yet, but the brat is damned hard to hit at all if you're not playing Tidus (or I suppose Zidane, another quick chara)), and most his attacks have him bouncing around the opponent like crazy. He spins and does cartwheels and kicks high up in the air on occasion, it just makes playing him a real pleasure. =D A far cry from the clumsy walk/run in FF10 itself. Just in case I haven't mentioned it yet, that's the biggest reason FF10 is probably my least favorite Final Fantasy. Other than the battles, it's a real pain to play.
Tidus was the fourth character I started playing, and the first I knew for certain I'd take to level 100 quickly.
Then Cloud! He's a real pain as an opponent, and his angst is so overly dramatic at times that it's more than just amusing. And his victory comments are made of win, I've laughed myself silly over some of them. I didn't expect it, but he turned out to be the second character I knew I'd take to 100 quickly. He's really good at aerial battle it turns out (it was surprising, most times I've lost to him when playing any other character was while battling on ground) and I love me some aerial battle. :P It helps that his attacks have a pretty good reach, and his other form has him in his Advent Children outfit, which looks really cool in Dissidia while flying around the battlefields. xD
Firion...well, he's a long-range fighter. Get close to your opponent, and you're pretty much dead. It took me a little while to learn that. As well as him being rather weak in the air. And as mentioned previously, I love aerial battles. It's a reflex by now. You get high up, then attack. That approach doesn't work on Firion, not at all. Taking him up to 28 felt more like a chore than anything. And while I love his personality and story, I most definitely don't like playing him in Dissidia. I had extreme trouble killing opponents, since the only HP attack he has (for now?) is a single-shot bow shot, and it doesn't even home in on the opponent. Pray they stay still long enough for you to hit them.
Squall I just started playing. I don't really have too much of an impression of his fighting skills yet, he's only level 5 for now, and at level 5 you don't even have Free Air Dash to chase after opponents through air, and both your Brave and HP attacks are very limited. Will have to see. He seems rather tolerable, although pretty slow in HP attacks, and that can bring trouble. But I did manage to beat a level 9 Kuja just before I quit playing the last time, so I guess he's pretty good when it comes down to it. But I don't know...he seems a bit generic. Maybe it's just the low level, though...he's mentioned as being a combo fighter after all, and there's really no combos possible at that level yet.
When I get Squall to level 28 later today (or early tomorrow) I'll try out Zidane next. I've been waiting for that one, Paku Romi as his voice actor and all. Plus FF9 being my favorite Final Fantasy. =D He's already appeared in Prologue, the Warrior's Destiny Odyssey final CS, and Squall's Destiny Odyssey CSs. He apparently travels with Bartz from FF5, and Squall tags along when he feels like it. xD
The groupings are interesting. Cecil, Tidus and Firion apparently travel and fight together for the most part, Cloud and the Warrior go alone, Onion Knight and Terra go together, and then there's the pair/trio of Zidane, Bartz and Squall. I don't know what I expected of the story mode, but seeing all those FF characters interact is really interesting. It tells something of each chara who they choose as their travel companions.
And not just the good guys, but the bad guys too. They're all scheming something by themselves, while following their common plan at least somewhat. They don't like or trust each other, and there have been several almost-fights among them. It's really entertaining! =D
...I haven't tried fighting on any of the bad guys yet. Or even fight against them in quick battle mode (I've unlocked the villains that correspond to the characters I've completed Destiny Odyssey on, so I could fight against those five now), I've decided to leave that for a bit later. I have my hands full trying to memorize the fighting styles of the good guys, I don't need to add the baddies to that just yet. xD;; Plus I seem to have this aversion to fighting against Zidane or Onion Knight. They're too quick (and in Zidane's case, bouncy). I'll eventually have to fight them to get the items they drop, but...maybe when I'm more accustomed to fighting on a suitable character to set against them. @__@
Dissidia consumes my life, yes? Almost 30 hours on the clock.
