Haha, remember when I decided to keep a weekly journal again? That lasted about 4 weeks. I'm impressed it made it past two. Anyways, because I still have things I wanted to talk about/record for my own purposes, I decided to see if I can get back into updating. I might not do it as a weekly thing anymore, maybe monthly. Who even knows.
I still want to talk about the anatomy class I took, because it was fairly interesting, but I'm going to wait to post that because I want to cover my summer courses, and what I'm doing in school now.
The summer courses were fantastic. I gained a lot of confidence that had been lost from crits with my old illustration professor, and consequently the work I produced was much better. For the first time in a while, I was happy to put something I had painted up on the wall. It was a great feeling. I got a handful of 70s, a couple of high 60s (normal at OCAD), and only one shitty mark, but I deserved that.
I'm taking the prof I had for the first summer semester again for fall (and maybe winter) this year, because I enjoyed his teaching methods. Crit was constructive, but always presented in a positive manner, and he found at least one encouraging thing to say about even the shittiest pieces. He also doesn't do group crits for rough work, which I hate doing. I haven't handed in a final for him yet this semester, so i'm waiting to see how his class will be in a normal illustration class. The summer illustration classes are definitely more chill than regular courses. Probably because 50% of the students taking them aren't illustration majors, and are doing the course for a minor.
The second [prof I had was also had a very relaxed class. I did a couple digital pieces for his because he really liked minimalistic stuff, and it was very easy to do that when you only have a day to go from rough to final. (Normally they space summer courses so you have a day for roughs, and 4 days for final, but due to a holiday the second semester's schedule was shifted to the opposite). So the second class I don't think I improved as much as the first, but I did get more practice with digital work, and conceptual stuff. His critiques were also very positive.
Because I passed both courses with relative ease, I'm back on track, and taking all the third year courses I should be. I get to choose expansion studios this year, and managed to get into the character concepts and environment concepts classes, which were apaprently filled up minutes after registration opened. The character concepts class itself isn't very interesting as it's mostly crits, but the projects are very fun. I'm also taking a book illustration class (required), and a few other thigns that are not as interesting. I've only handed in one final project at this point, so I'm not sure how I am doing grade-wise, but hopefully not too poorly! I don't mind taking the summer classes, but I would rather rather everything the first time around.
I don't know when I'll update again, but it will probably be about that anatomy class from second yar. I have some stories about it that need to be told. :P
Oh, and does anybody remember Penguin/that socially awkward kid I knew in high school? I saw him on the subway platform today. He waved and me, and then walked away. It was odd, but I was happy I didn't have to sit with him on the train for 40 minutes and make really awakward small talk.
