Chretien: Former Liberal Prime Minister
Harper: Current Conservative Prime Minister
Demers: Appointed to senate by Harper

To those criticizing the appointment of Jacques DeMers:
How do his qualifications differ from those of Chretien appointee Tommy Banks (a musician)?
Unfortunately, Harper's hand was forced by the obstructionist opposition. He is playing hardball with rules forged by the LPC.
Blame them if you don't like it.
First of all, it isn't obstructionist to vote against something you disagree with.
Now on to the nUtMeAt. Tommy Banks is a musician, if by musician you mean pianist, conductor, arranger, and composer. But what were his qualifications for the senate seat he received in 2000? According to his official senate biography:
- During the administration of the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney, Tommy Banks was appointed for two consecutive terms to the Board of the Canada Council for the Arts, and to a further term as policy advisor to the Board.
- He was appointed by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Michael Wilson to two consecutive terms as a member of the Sectoral Advisory Group, International Trade (SAGIT) which advised the Government during negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
- Under the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark he served as Alberta spokesman in the campaign for the national referendum on constitutional amendment and, with Professor Kathleen Mahoney, argued the “yes” side, opposing Stephen Harper and Mel Hurtig on the referendum’s televised debate.
- He received the Order of Canada in 1991.
To the best of my knowledge, the following is a complete list of Jacque Demer's qualifications for the senate seat he received in 2009:
- Was a former head coach for the World Hockey Association and the National Hockey League.
- He has won two consecutive Jack Adams Awards for NHL Coach of the Year.
- In 1993, led the Montreal Canadiens to their most recent Stanley Cup victory.
- Worked as a TV analyst for National Hockey League matches broadcast on the French language sports channel RDS.
- Was functionally illiterate until at least 2005.
