Iron Man 2's villain mixes Ari Gold and Bill Murray
from
SciFi Wire Sam Rockwell plays a small but key role in Jon Favreau's upcoming Iron Man 2: military industrialist Justin Hammer, a rival to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark.
In the comics, Hammer is an English-born criminal weapons maker who commandeers Iron Man's armor at one point to frame him with a political assassination.
It's unclear what role Hammer will play in the upcoming sequel film, but Rockwell's description makes it seem like he's a bit different. Here's what he told
Dark Horizons:
"He's kind of more of the plucky comic relief, but he's got a little bit of an edge. He's a little pissed off. ... He's a little more Salieri than he is the plucky comic relief, but Mickey Rourke is really the bad guy. ... I'm more of a cross between the agent character in Entourage and Salieri and maybe Bill Murray in Kingpin."
Rockwell's Hammer as Ari Gold-meets-Salieri, the rival composer to Mozart from Amadeus? Interesting. Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010.
And for those of you into comics, Iron Man Vs. Whiplash #1 comes out tomorrow (comics are a day behind due to last week's holiday messing with shipping schedules).
