Mighty Marvelites, are you ready for a repulsor blast of joy? Good, because we're here to tell you that "Iron Man 2" is officially in production!

"Iron Man 2" stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, John Slattery, Mickey Rourke and Samuel L. Jackson. Jon Favreau will direct "Iron Man 2", the sequel to "Iron Man," with the screenplay by Justin Theroux.

Based on Marvel's iconic Super Hero, "Iron Man 2" continues the story of the 2008 summer box office blockbuster "Iron Man 2," the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Studios. The first film in the franchise has grossed over a half billion dollars worldwide at the box office.

"Iron Man 2" is being released in theatres domestically on May 7, 2010 and distributed worldwide by Paramount Pictures. Tele Munchen will distribute the film in Germany and Austria.

"Iron Man 2" is being produced by Marvel Studios' President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Louis D'Esposito, Jon Favreau, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Denis Stewart and Susan Downey.

In addition to "Iron Man 2," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Thor" on May 20, 2011, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

I think it's interesting to note that Susan Downey is listed as an executive producer. Good for her!

Also, IESB.net is reporting that Shandling's character is called Senator Stern.

And finally, for those of you wondering what happened to Tim Robbins playing Howard Stark, he has squashed those reports as "internet rumors." (Source: MTV.com).

ETA: IESB.net, who initially reported that Oldman was on set has not retracted that. They now say:

"UPDATE: Although he was accurate with the addition of Shandling to the cast as Senator Stern, it looks like our on-set source was wrong this time around about Oldman. Joblo.com has talked to Oldman's manager who has denied Oldman was on set in Los Angeles yesterday. The on-set source who contacted us yesterday swore up and down it was Oldman and heard his name as well, but it looks like he is completely wrong."
