So I was out running errands (I live in Birmingham, AL) and ran across a slew of $7 Iron Man shirts! I grabbed my BlackBerry and snapped some pics: ( Read more... )
It's an image rights issue. They have to pay him like woah to use his likeness in the merchandising. It's not worth it to them.
Take, for example, the comic book version of Jack Sparrow. It has the elements of the character owned by the corporate parent (costume, hair) but not Johnny Depp's face. That'd cost.
Exactly. Marvel owns the Iron Man armor and indica, but not the face, and since there are no copyrightable elements in live-action "Tony Stark" (except maybe the shape of the goatee, but that's a stretch.) he can't show up in the merch.
Also, kids think it's more fun to color a red and gold robot guy than a dude in a business suit or wifebeater. (Kids are stupid.)
Oh, yeah, I think I remember reading something about that in regards to the Buffy and Angel comics, how the characters can't resemble the actors TOO MUCH or some such silly BS.
Personally, I think they should pay Robert for his likeness, because they'd make it back like whoa. But then, what do I know? I'm just a consumer, not a marketing genius.
*looks around house at the ridiculous amount of Iron Man stuff I've bought*
Let's see. Three action figures. Four graphic novels. Five comics. The novelization by Peter David. The animated movie. The soundtrack. The SE DVD will go in the collection on the 30th. And when they double-dip and add a commentary track, I'll no doubt buy that DVD too. And there's three t-shirts (with the same design) that I designed myself, two of which I made and one of which I had made at one of those custom tee places and which Marvel saw not a dime of, although I would have been glad to throw money their way for what I got.
This squeeing fangirl (I will own that label, thanks) has plenty of disposable income and is 45 years old. I would love to dispose of some of that income on t-shirts with the likeness of RDJ. They're just not tossing the right bones my way.
Hell, if they gave us a t-shirt with some of the Granov artwork from Extremis, I'd be all over that...
Those are very cool, however.

I was actually telling someone the other day that the best part about being an adult is having the money to buy my own toys. :P

Oh well. Chances are that the t-shirt I designed is far cooler than anything corporate would have come up with. :p

That image just slays me. And I had tons of fun playing with it in Paint Shop Pro.

I'd like to make this icon into a shirt (and send the icon maker a free one for the idea!)
