07. School-age fic.
Dean sat down next to her on the bleachers, hunching his shoulders against the late September wind. She pushed a loose strand of blond hair back behind her ear and sighed.
“Are you sure the captain of the football team should be seen with the girl who likes to play with knives?” she asked, still hurting over his rejection in front of everyone.
“Are you sure the girl who likes to play with knives isn’t going to slash the captain of the football team’s tires because he’s a stupid jackass before he gets a chance to apologize?”

Jo ejected the cartridge and locked the bolt back into place. Raising the rifle to her shoulder she took aim. Even from three hundred yards, she knew he could hear her and that she could make the shot. He’d stolen Guy’s powers. He could hear.
“That was a warning shot. Next time, I’ll take an ear.”

“You’ve never said why you hate magic so much,” Jo said softly as she manipulated the chi flowing through Dean’s body. The car crash that had mangled his leg and lower back had twisted his energies and that only increased his pain.
“Never going to either,” he replied, voice tight as she worked. “Just hurry the fuck up.”
