Detective Verse: How To Wait

Feb 26, 2010 20:49

It was kind of weird being the first one home. Jo was used to coming home and seeing Sam’s jacket, shoes then Sam himself. Tonight, only Ford greeted her. She was tempted to call him and ask, but that felt kind of clingy and she wasn’t really the clingy type. So, she walked Ford, ordered dinner and settled in to wait ( Read more... )

Work was hell. Two months into the job and every day just got worse. The lack of organization at the clerk's office was frustrating enough, but the technology that was outdated back before Sam was even born made him want to scream and claw at people.

His boss never failed to point out that he was there as a favor to Dean, and that he had to just sit down, shut up and do his job. Don't rock the boat, or he'll get thrown overboard.

There had been a large case that had gone through the Circuit Court that afternoon in which all the paperwork needed to be available the following morning. Sam had tried to get it prepared, but one of the motions had gotten caught in the copier's pull area and it had torn as Sam pulled it out.

He was still licking his wounds from the verbal reprimanding as he finally put his keys in the door and walked inside. He knew he was late and he just wanted to take a hot shower and crawl into bed. He was so worn out that he didn't even feel hungry. Just tired.

She was on her feet when she heard the key scrape and then sat back down on the couch. She wasn't Ford. She didn't need to run to the door just because Sam was home.

She couldn't quite keep the excitement out of her voice though when he came in.

"Hey Sam, there's leftovers in the over still warm if you're hungry."

She liked having him home.

"Not hungry, but thanks."

Even coming home to Jo wasn't enough to get the depression out of his voice. He tried to shake it off before he got home but it was too much today and he barely scratched Ford behind his ears before taking his jacket off and hanging it up.

The puppy whined and pawwed at Sam's leg, and Sam pushed him back down. "No Ford. Down."

Okay, that wasn't a good sign. Jo got to her feet and went over to him, leaning against the wall. She studied him for a moment.

"You look like you had a bad day," she said, reaching out and rubbing his arm lightly.

"Bad week is more like it, and it's not even over yet."

He sighed and then looked up at her as his hair fell over his face. "I just want to take a shower and go to bed. Don't feel you have to be quiet on account of me."

She wasn't going to let him get away with hiding from her. Stepping into his space, she brushed his hair back from his eyes.

"Tell me about it," she said, trying to coax him. "You can even tell me about it in the shower if you want."

He was always such a comfort to her, she really wanted to be the same for him.

He didn't want to say bad about his job. Dean had gotten him the job and with his history, it was probably the only respectable job Sam was ever going to be able to hold.

His fuck-ups were just going to haunt him forever.

"Nothing to talk about. It's just a stressful job. I'll get used to it eventually."

He did close his eyes are her touch. "Jo, I'm alright. Just tired."

She cupped his cheek in her hand. "You don't let me get away with that, I'm not about to let you."

Because she cared and she knew the signs of a miserable Sam. He looked more unhappy with each day and she didn't want that for him. She wanted him happy.

She just didn't know how to breach the subject with him. it seemed taboo.

He gave a had chuckle. "Guess not. It was worth a try though."

Sam stepped closer and just rested his forehead against hers. "I really don't want to talk about it though. I'd rather just forget it."

"If you don't talk about it, it'll bother you."

It always got to her if she didn't talk about it, just ate away at her and drove her nuts. She didn't want that for him. She only wanted good things for him.

"Jo, I don't want to talk bad about my job. Dean pulled a lot of strings to get it for me..."

"I don't care what Dean did. If you're miserable, I say screw the job and go find something that can make you happy. It's not like I'm hurting for overtime or anything."

"Yeah, and what am I going to do, Jo? I've got a record. A drug record. No one wants to hire an ex-junkie."

He didn't mean it to come off that harsh, but he was tired of everyone seeing him that way. He hated the way some of them looked at him at work.

"But you know people willing to fight for you. Or, hell, go into business for yourself. Sam, I just hate seeing you miserable."

She really hated it. The Sam she knew and loved was going away and she missed him.

"I'm not always going to be sunshine and roses, Jo. I have my bad days just like everyone else. Just let me have a bit of peace right now, alright?"

He pulled away from her, heading towards the bathroom to take his shower.

God, she sucked at this. She just wanted to make him feel better and maybe give him the permission to quit if that was what he needed.

"Sorry, I was just..." she crossed her arms and looked down, "Trying to help. Sorry."
