Summary: While celebrating switching Stark Tower to it's own arc reactor power supply, Tony and Pepper are interrupted by Agent Coulson, who is bringing Tony info on the Tesseract, an energy source stolen from SHIELD by Loki. In an attempt to get it back and stop Loki, SHIELD has decided to put together a team of powerful individuals under the Avengers Iniative. When Loki starts causing trouble in Germany, Iron Man (with the help of Captain America) bags Loki and takes him into SHIELD custody, with only a minor delay when Loki's brother Thor shows up and gets into a fight with Tony over who gets to be in charge of their new prisoner, Asgard or SHIELD.
Onboard SHIELD's Helicarrier, Tony digs around in SHIELD's system in order to root out any secrets Fury's been keeping from them. Turns out, Fury hadn't been entirely truthful about the Tesseract, but before the argument can really get into full swing, the Helicarrier is attacked and a couple of the engines are taken out. Tony, with Cap's help, manage to keep the Helicarrier from falling out of the sky, but one of their friends loses their life in the process of fending off the attack.
Angered, Tony figures out Loki's plan and confronts the Asgardian in Stark Tower. The Avengers are too late to stop Loki from enacting his plan, however, and a portal is opened in the sky above Manhattan, allowing the Chitauri to swoop in and start destroying everything. For the first time, the six Avengers fight together as a team to defend the city from the alien invasion. Things look grim, however, until Tony diverts a nuke meant to take out Manhattan as a last ditch attempt to stop the invasion, instead flying the missile up through the portal and directing it at the Chitauri mothership. His armor's energy depleted, Tony falls through the quickly closing portal and is caught by the Hulk before he hits the ground.
The Chitauri taken care of and Loki secured, the team goes out for shawarma and Tony and Bruce drive away into the sunset to do science together. The End.
