a day in the life

Jarvis doesn't really sleep, when he's not human. He takes some down time for running diagnostics, fixing anything that comes up amiss, that sort of thing - but it's not the same as sleeping. Still, it's adequate rest for the circumstances ( Read more... )

Rhodey's pretty used to letting himself into this house, by now. Doorbells are for people who haven't been friends with Tony Stark for 20 years. He's got all the necessary security codes and the various systems know him, which is probably a good thing, because he's got a good-sized bag of take-out and a six-pack under one arm, and he needs the other to shoulder open doors.

In the house, a glance around for any signs of life (mostly looking for Pepper), and then down the stairs to the workshop; it's pretty standard. At the glass doors, he juggles food and beer to key in the three-digit code, and he steps inside.

"Tony," he calls out as the door shuts behind him. The food's going on the imaging table, even if it's not meant for eating; another minute of trying to balance it and he was going to drop it.

Stark's got to be down here somewhere. He always is.

[OOC: Let me know if any of this isn't okay, and I can change it!]

Jarvis turns down Tony's music, as Colonel Rhodes reaches the door to the garage.
It's not polite to make your company shout at you.

"I'm over here, Rhodey!" Tony is underneath a car, tinkering cheerfully. "There are cookies on my desk, but Pepper and Jarvis made them, so I'm a bit worried, frankly."

Rhodey finishes setting down the food; shoots a wary look at the desk.

"What kind of cookies?" he asks, heading over toward the desk.

(This is the all-important question.)

"Chocolate chip." Tony rolls out from under the car, wiping his hands on a rag. "The bottoms are rather burnt, but they're not too bad."

"You're on your own with eating these," he says, and he gives the cookie that he had picked up a light toss back onto the plate. It lands with a decided clink, and Rhodey is now even more okay with the fact that he didn't take a bite out of it.

"What was up with the sudden domestic impulse?" he asks over his shoulder, as he snags a stool with his foot and drags it up to the imaging table and starts pulling takeout boxes out of the bag. White rice, pork lo mein, hunan chicken, and there it is -- moo goo gai pan. That one, Rhodey's claiming for himself and his chopsticks.

(There's a disposable plastic fork in the bag, because -- as he would put it in more irritated moments -- he's a better friend than Tony Stark deserves.)

"Yeah, I think I'm going to throw them to the incinerator." Tony reaches out, grabbing the pork lo mein, and rummaging in the bag for the fork. "Ask Pepper. It was totally her idea. She's been acting strange lately." He grabs one of the beers, and stares at it for a moment.

"Jarvis? Bottle opener. Please." Huh. He said please.

"Well, I suppose, since you asked so nicely."
And lo, there is a bottle opener.

Rhodey shoots a look at the magically-appearing bottle opener, but he doesn't comment.

"Anybody'd act strange, they had to put up with you all day every day."

Hey. It's Jarvis. He probably could find just about anything around Tony's desk area. A bottle opener's nothing.

"Hey, now. There are people who would pay good money to be around me for a day." He takes a long drink of beer. "And all night too."

He rolls his eyes tolerantly; takes a bite of the moo goo gai pan that he has unofficially claimed for himself.

Rhodey, for the record, is an excellent hand with chopsticks.

Most of the bite is gone when he says, "Clearly, those're people who haven't ever tried to get you to do something." He swallows. "Thanks for the plans, by the way."

"How the hell do you use those things?" Tony gestures in the general direction of the chopsticks. "They're... sticks. And you're eating noodles. It makes no sense."

Another few bites of food later, he just shrugs. "Hey, doing what I can to help the military." Beat. "After I kinda fucked things up for a while."

Rhodey looks at him for a minute, then glances back down at the takeout container so he can see what he's doing as he grabs another bite with the chopsticks.

"You took a stand on something you believed in," he says. "That's not nothing, Tony."

(Even if it did fuck things up for a while.)
