I'm not sure what got me thinking about it, was it just me thinking or was it the constant songs on the radio about it. I know I like to take the wait and see approach, partly out of laziness, and if music these days is an indicator then alot of other people are in the same boat. The reason all this came up is a guy named Serge. Sergio was a coach of mine a couple of years ago back in Pittsburgh, we've kept in touch the best we can and two days ago I got an email labled 'urgent'. I rolled my eyes, but read it like I read all other emails. Apparently his long time girlfriend broke up with him and he didn't know what to do. Sergio said this happened 2 months ago, but hes just coming to terms with it now. He says he doesnt know what to do and in the end he will prolly just wait and see if anything comes from it. Thats not the gun-ho guy that use to go pick up chicks with me at Club Laga with our fake ids, or the guy who talked me into bungie jumping during a soccer trip. I called Serge up and asked what happened. He answered, sounding down, but had a ton to say. Things have changed, hes getting older, he doesnt know what to do, he doesnt have the energy for all this, he doesnt know what she wants, things wont work out, his sister doesnt like her, shes asian and doesnt understand his lifestyle, those are the ones that stuck out but trust me i just sat and listened for about half an hour about reasons why it wouldnt work. After he took a second to think i jumped, and said something 'the only way you can think of all these excuses, is if the person really means alot to ya' to which he said 'no shit mike'. I guess we all have our deep moments, and Serge said that I would be the last person he would come to with women troubles. If he were infront of me he would have seen my eyes roll, but all I can say is 'then why in bloody hell did you email me asking for help'. Sergio told me because of the way I use to be, not the way I've been recently. Back in the day i didnt care, heck none of my friends did, we walked all over people always got our way and when something bad happened we would just go out and find another chick of the moment. Thats not to say I didn't have relationships back then, but when somethin dodgy happened i just left...closed all doors and moved the fuck on. Thats about the point of the conversation when I realized he didn't want me to help him with his girlfriend (who is an amazing person in her own right), he wanted me to talk him into moving on. Am I that guy? The one who gives up without a fight because there is 'always something better over the next hill'? I ask him...and he says thats the way I've always been but recently I'm more careful. The last time I went to Pittsburgh...wow its been months (too bad...) he and I and some of our other buddies went out and Brian bet we couldnt get these two older girls numbers (id say late 20's) which looked super tough cuz serge and I both look young for our ages. I mean obviously we got their numbers and the shorter one (Mary i believe?) asked me to come back to her house...she has a house? I say I can't, that I have to take my buddy (I pointed to Brian he was less then amused) to the airport and said thanks and that I'd call next time I was in town. Serge reminds me that a couple of years ago I woulda said something like 'forget your house, lets go to the park' or something incredibly rediculous. He's right, I'm a spot different...and thats when i tell him that he needs to do something to get Kim back. He laughs and says then why don't you do something and get...and I cut him off, and tell him theyve been together for years and they are great together. Really though they are great, and Serge is a complete dumbass if he expects me to talk him out of tryin to salvage the best thing thats happened to him since the Abercrombie models we met in Hershey during the tournament 4 years ago. Serge is one of two people I've explained my entire situation to (told a fellow misplaced Bostonian a week ago or so) and he says if I cant man up then why should he? I laugh me not man up, thats what I do best, and I once again remind him that we arent talkin about me we are talkin about him. For a moment he dropped his defenses and said something about really loving her and that he would do anything...so i tell him to get the fuck off the phone with me and find a way to get her back. He says he was really wishin that I would talk him out of it, but I can't I dont want a buddy of mine to give up on someone that makes him happy. We start talkin about what she likes, and he says baseball is somethin that she loves...I tell him they could stay at my parents house in Boston and he could take her outta town to see a Red Sox game (I don't care who you are, if you like baseball at all you want to see a Sox game in Boston). He says shes a yankee fan, and i say 'drop the bitch' in a joking way, and we both laugh. I tell him not to give up but I was already late for class so I had to run...but before I could hang up he says I shouldn't give up either. I simply say I know and hang up.
I have no idea why I wait, and I push everyone else to action...I doubt its because I procrastinate, I think it's because I'm afraid of the unknown and puttin myself out there. Who knows, for now...waiting is the best option...but not for Sergio specially since I am about to call his ex right now.
