The dependence on technology in todays business is impressive. I know that I work in an IT department but still.
There was a problem with the network at around 3 this afternoon and the building's internal network went down. First sign, all our lovely Cisco IP phones went blank. Then everyone started talking when they realise that while their computers still work they cannot access networked resources. A couple of my friends walk past and invite me to have a coffee while the support people work out what went wrong. So we wander down to a cafe and chat until 4. Walk back to the building and as we get upstairs the chief warden comes on the PA and announces that the network is stuffed and will probably not be fixed today so anyone who doesn't have something vital that they need to do should probably go home.
So a building of about 500 people empties and the road leaving the precinct is clogged with cars.
Such is our reliance on technology a single point of failure brought the entire group to a grinding halt. I guess it was just lucky that it happened late on a Friday afternoon.
