It is freaking hot outside. Its 97 outside, but their's no wind, and with the sun, they're saying that it feels like the low 100s.
So, I had 4 of my 5 classes today. I think they'll all be pretty good. Here's my annual rundown.
English 420 - 19th Century British Novel - I really like the professor. He's got a really dry sense of humour, so I think that class discussions will be good. I also like the reading list. We're doing David Copperfield first. I've always wanted to read that, but I've never felt like I had time, so perhaps its good that I'm doing it for class.
English 436 - Modern American Novel - I really don't know how I feel about the professor. At first, she seemed quite nice, although perhaps a little quirky. But she said a few things in class that were red flagish. For instance, that she thinks all literature is political. Then, she also doesn't like undergrads to email her. Email is reserved for professors, graduate students, and other colleagues. That seemed slightly snotty to me. No final though. And Catherine (roomate) is in my class, which is fun.
Spanish 489 - Special Topics in Spanish - The Conquest of Mexico -I'm taking this with Dr. Gimmel, who is one of my favorite professors. I think its going to be hard, but interesting. We're doing quite a bit of history, which interests me. I'm really happy to be in Dr. Gimmel's class again, and Tyler (from Puebla) and Laura (one of my flatmates) are in the class.
History 342 - History of Nazi Germany - this is the class about which I am most excited. The professor seems quite interesting, although perhaps slightly awkward socially (wouldn't be the first time). I got really excited reading the syllabus, which is always a good sign. I think I'm going to work with this professor to write my Senior Thesis, so I'm glad he seems like a decent human being. Its a slightly larger class (30 students perhaps?), and so he's asked that we give him each a photo and on the back write down 10 words that describe ourselves. Out of the ordinary, but its nice that he wants to know our names and interests.
I've also started my job at the Baker Center, which is going quite well. The only downside so far is that I have to dress up A LOT. Its a downside since I go right after class and also because it is so incredibly hot out. I really don't think I can wear a blazer. Not when its almost 100 degrees out doors and I have to climb a huge hill to get there.
