fic: the road to happily ever after

“And...Cut!”

The moment those words were uttered, Jonathan couldn’t help but crack a large grin over his face and start a snickering fit with his best friend Lea Michele. No matter how many romantic scenes they performed together, there was always a moment of amusement after the rehearsal, whether it be on Broadway or on the set of Glee. They’d just been filming for Jonathan’s big entrance into Glee, with the Lionel Richie number, “Hello” and Jonathan had just finished his cheesy, ‘how’s Friday?’ line when the giggling had started between the two best friends. Finally, getting a hold of himself, Jonathan shot a pleasant smile to his co-star and best friend, slipping an arm around her waist as they got up from their spot at their piano and, after a high-five from Ryan, the pair were heading backstage to get a much needed bottle of water after their twelfth take of the same song.

“I can’t believe you’re here, when I got the call from Ryan that you were guest starring, it literally took me half an hour to stop screaming, poor Cory thought I was getting mugged and practically sprinted out with a baseball bat in his hand.”

It took a few moments to stop chuckling at the image of Cory in such a position, as well as another moment to wonder just where he had got a baseball bat, before Jonathan was finally able to answer. “Well, you know how much I love what you guys do, besides, how could I say no to another chance at playing your love interest?”

“God, don’t remind me, is it sad that I’ve kissed my gay best friend more times than I have any other guy?”

“Alas, all the ladies come crawling back to Jonathan Groff in the end, it’s a curse” He remarked, with a big, goofy grin on his face, which only increased in size as Lea offered him a playful slap to the chest and her own grin as a response. Finally, reaching a large table filled with bottles of water, not to mention a much needed coffee machine, Lea grabbed a bottle for herself and sipped it silently, before eyeing up her best friend and giving him a knowing smirk.

“Since we’re on the topic of love interests, how has the dating world been treating Mister Jonathan Groff, hmmm?”

Rolling his eyes at that look she was giving him, Jonathan took a sip of his own water, already feeling it starting to cool his throat down. Wiping his forehead with the bottle, he gave his own smirk in response. “Now Lea, what kind of person do you take me for, I’m not one to kiss and tell, you know that much about me.”

“...So no dates then?”

“Bingo”

“You know, you’re going to end up being one sad, old man soon enough with that attitude and once I’m married you won’t have me to constantly come over to your house and watch old movies with you on Valentine’s Day” She declared, flicking his nose playfully with her fingers, causing the older of the two to snort softly and jab her slightly with his own finger.

“Hey! Who says I’ll need you by then? Worse comes to worse, I’ll get a cat or a dog to watch the movies with me...or maybe a gerbil.” He pondered, before the same, big grin was covering his face and he once again wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close into a loving embrace.

“You don’t need to worry about me so much Lea, I’m just a little selective-”

“You mean picky.”

“Will you let me finish?” He asked as he looked down at her, as she grinned up at him like a Cheshire cat, quietly snuggled into his chest as they kept walking. “...I’m just not ready to settle for anything that doesn’t make me feel something special and I’m willing to wait until I’m turning gray in the hair and saggy in the face if that’s how long it takes before I find that someone.” He spoke softer this time as they walked and he only realised at this point that Lea was the one who was actually deciding exactly where they were going; made sense, after all, Jonathan had already managed to get lost three times just getting to the set and back.

“I know, I just want you to get your happily ever after, you deserve it...”

As usual, Lea’s words had brought a soft, tender smile to Jonathan’s lips and he leaned down and kissed her head. “We both will, I promise” He reassured, before looking up and bringing the grin back to his face. “Alright, are you going to tell me where we are going or am I going to just have to keep guessing until you get annoyed and tell me anyway?”

“Well, you said you wanted to meet the rest of the cast and we’ve got a break until eleven, so what better time than the present?”

Jonathan would simply nod and offer another smile when Lea met his gaze; truth be told, he always got a little nervous when meeting new people and while he’d already gotten on with Cory, Kevin and Amber rather well, he still had a lot of other faces to see and as much as he didn’t want to admit it, he was a little intimidated. Of course, Lea was somehow able to read his mind (seriously, how did this girl do that?) and offered him a gentle squeeze.

“They’ll all love you, don’t worry so much!”

Though her words did offer him some comfort, Jonathan couldn’t completely get rid of the nerves that were playing up in his stomach as finally managed to get passed the rushing crew and many wires that consumed the floor and headed for the auditorium stage, where a group of young performers happened to be relaxing and going over their scripts.

“Hey guys, I brought a friend to say hello, try not to crowd him, he’s a little timid”

Giving her a raised eyebrow and chuckle at such an introduction, Jonathan decided to get over his initial nerves and turned to the other cast members, letting his hand slip from Lea’s waist and to offer them all a wave and a cheerful smile. Within minutes, he had already gotten their names and were laughing along with them and thankfully not in a forceful, uncertain way. The nerves were slipping away and Dianna and Jenna were already begging to hear any kind of embarrassing stories they could of Lea, much to the girl’s protests.

“You know, if we’re going to embarrass Lea, it’s only fair we bring Chris along for the ride” commented Mark, smirking slightly as Lea gave him a small slap on the arm and in response, he began to use Dianna as some sort of shield against the ‘child star’ as they liked to call her. Jonathan couldn’t help but grin along with the others, but now that he thought about it, he hadn’t seen the other boy among the rest of the cast, maybe he was shooting a scene or was late for work.

“What’s this? Making fun of Lea? When should I start filming?”

Or maybe not.

Now, Jonathan had heard that voice many times before coming from either his television or in a music store he happened to browsing through, but hearing it in person...there was something a little different about it and took a second for the Broadway performer to even recognise it as he turned around to face it’s owner.

Suddenly, Jonathan didn’t feel so relaxed, he didn’t feel calm, he felt scared, he felt nervous and above all, he felt like he wanted to faint. His brown eyes were meeting pale blue ones, a colour he had never seen before in eyes, managing to look both pale and yet so vibrant, the colour was almost like that of the sky before a storm. Clear and warm, yet ever so slightly grey, with a hint of uncertainty in them. Swallowing the lump in his throat, Jonathan felt his voice leave him as he let his eyes linger and slowly roll over the other; whenever he had seen this boy before on the television, it had been in some outrageous outfit which he swore nobody but on a runway would wear, but now, there was no trace of such an outfit. Pale, clean jeans were hanging around the boy’s waist, they were fitted, but were by no means skinny jeans, a pair of converse shoes on, red and white in colour fit his feet. Letting his eyes travel up, a white t-shirt was pressed on the slim frame, with a blue shirt on top. It was so simple and yet, Jonathan was having a hard time looking away and it was only when the other boy took a step forward, that he met the boy’s gaze once more.

“You must be the infamous Jonathan, I hear you’re the one with all the juicy gossip on Lea and her child star days.”

The older of the two boys was only half listening to his words, his mind still taking time to take in the whole presence of the other. The boy’s face was practically snow white, save a few freckles here and there, his smile was bright and honest, almost innocent like. His hair was chestnut like but unlike his character, it wasn’t pushed back or being suffocated in hairspray. It was more scruffy, yet Jonathan would bet just about anything that it was soft as can be, were he to run his fingers through it.

“Y-yeah...I’m Jonath-” He froze right there, practically feeling the heat rushing to his face as he realised his voice was much too shaky and much too high at this moment . Swallowing slowly and forcing a smile once more, Jonathan nodded his head, trying to keep control over his voice.

“Yeah, I’m Jonathan. It’s great to finally meet you...Chris.”

While Jonathan tried to desperately sort out his ability to speak and look normal at the same time, Lea shot a glance to both Jenna and Dianna; all three girls had the same knowing smiles on their faces.

Looks like happily ever after might not be so far away after all.
