I just found out last week that there is a UW trip to Costa Rica for 14 students, to study the environment, community, and ecology of the pacific lowlands in the country. It is a 15-credit, 9 week session from late March until early June (in other words, spring quarter), with part of that as an independent study/research portion (4 credits). I am making this my business. I am so going.
The application date is November 16th, so I need to get on it... I need 2+ letters of recommendation. So far I have 2... I would like to find a third, but if I can't... then I can't. The other issue, needless to say, is cost... the whole trip is $3800, which includes food and lodging but not airfare or personal spending. I can't sublet my room because of a clause in my lease, but goddammit... I will find a way to go on this trip. Shit, are you kidding?! Costa Rica??! The mere thought of the biodiversity makes me kinda wanna pee.
So anyway, I would be able to take a leave from work, and from the zoo, and all that jazz... but then there's the $1350 in rent that I would have to pay, the $500 airfare, $3800 program expense, and whatever spending money I need, all subtracted from the income I won't have because I won't be working... I WILL FIND A WAY!!!! When in doubt, ask Dad.
And did I mention the FOOD?! Home-cooked, "gourmet" vegetarian fare. Help in the kitchen is welcome. EEE!
Tamanduas and sloths and coendous... not to mention the MONKEYS! and of course, snakes and spiders and butterflies and birds up the yin-yang... If you have some spare positive thoughts, send 'em my way!
