I have begun the search for graduate schools. Nothing intensive, just the occasional sessions in front of the PC, investigating possible schools.
For instance: University of Wisconsin/Madison, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, UNC, Boston College, etc...etc. Couple even have Irish History programs.
I feel incredibly unprepared; I also feel a bit betrayed by the History department. I realize that few UTC history majors actually head off to grad school, but at least they should pretend to keep grad school requirements in mind. Shouldn't they?
The main concern that I have is in regard's to this infamous "language requirement" that taints all the grad program sheets I read. Many programs require that by the time a MA is received the student be proficient in at least 2 languages. Medievalists have to manage three!! Of course, if I were interested in pursuing American studies, I could find a decent program that would be appeased by my pitiful Latin experience. Not European. I thought that my interests in Britain and Ireland would save me from this dreaded "language requirement," but that doesn't seem to work for all programs.
Not that I wouldn't want to be proficient in 3 languages - cuz it's clear that such a skill would make me awesome - it's that I've never taken anything but latin. (except for some sketchy spanish in 6th and 8th grade...neither got much past "Hola, me llamo est Autumn. Com e'stas? And I'm not sure if that's even correctly written)
So, I'm thinking about going to McKay's and picking up a beginner's french text and then borrowing the beginner's German text from the RR. If all I have to do is be able to read and do grammar, then I might be okay. Latin does have its advantage, like instilling the ability to resign oneself to hours of translation. (it's clear that there is a little bit of masochism in every classic's student)
Now if this longshot-ploy doesn't develop any positive results, which is likely, then at least I'll keep myself amused this summer.
Oh, mother's day was nice, banana pudding was nice, the drive was nice. Saw Kingdom of Heaven which was nice...not great...but nice. And right now, sleep would be nice.
