FST: Nothing S'Good Can Last (War for the Oaks)

Title: Nothing S'Good Can Last
Fandom: War for the Oaks
Pairing: Eddi McCandry/Willy Silver
Rating: PG
Notes: fst's prompt was "it couldn't last" this month, and I immediately wanted to do an Eddi/Willy mix, as they have such bizarre chemistry in the book. Like Hedge says, "nothing s'good can last." Major spoilers for the entire book (I am serious, as my reasoning for each song is actually quoted text. I highly recommend you read the darn thing, though; it's pretty freaking good.)

EDIT: katia_chan uploaded the entire book in HTML format! So if you haven't read it, go here to download.

1. Your Ex Lover is Dead (Final Fantasy Mix) (Stars)

"Go away, Stuart." She kept her voice low, hoping Stuart would, too. But he was too drunk to care. The sharp edge of his words made heads turn their way.

"How 'bout you?" he said to Willy. "You like dicking an out of work second-rate chick vocalist?"

Willy said, his voice very even, "Actually, I'm the guitar player for her new band."

2. Napalm Love (Air)

Eddi came to the sleepy realization that she did know a few fairy tales after all, in English ballads. Was there one with a phouka in it?

She didn't realize Willy had stopped until she felt his lips brush hers. "Do you know 'Jack O'Rion?'" she asked him.

"Yeah, but I'm not gonna do it," he replied, a quiver of laughter in his voice. "Too close to home. Do you want to go to sleep?"

Eddi opened her eyes and saw him, naked to the waist, perfect, his eyes full of banked fire. She shook her head.

"I'm glad of that," he murmured with self-mockery that she didn't understand.

3. The Little Things Give You Away (Linkin Park)

There was burning in his eyes. Eyes don't really do that, she told herself. But these were living jewels out of Faerie, and God alone knew what they could do. Belated she remembered what he was: a warrior of the Sidhe, a lord of the Seelie Court. It would be easy to be afraid of him.

4. Cold & Intimate (Nitin Sawhney)

He sat for a moment, watching his right thumb stroke the edge of his left. "I...It's been a long while...." He pulled his hands apart suddenly, and they made a pair of half-finished frustrated arcs. "I've run out of charming euphemisms. Eddi...I don't want to sleep alone tonight."

He met her eyes (oh, those speaking green gemstones of his), then looked away into the darkened room.

She waited for her emotions to stop flailing, until she knew it was hopeless to wait. Then she said, "No." That was too bald. "I'm sorry. But no." Was that worse? Probably.

5. Anything at All (Over the Rhine)

"I'm going home," she said.

He looked up, one eyebrow raised. When he spoke his voice was full of mockery, and Eddi couldn't tell if it was at her expense or his. "No sad speeches about hoping we can still be friends-- I'm grateful for that, anyway."

"You've seen too many movies."

"I suppose I have. I didn't get that from personal experience, you know."

6. Small Figures in a Vast Expanse (Rilo Kiley)

"If you were just a goddamn guitarist, I'd tell you to mind your own business."

Willy shrugged. "Maybe you ought to, anyway."

7. Signal to Noise (Peter Gabriel)

He shook his head. "Do your people ever write songs about anything besides love and death?" A thread of impatience ran through his voice, side by side with something else.

"Now and then."

"Couldn't prove it by me." His hands were still again, and he looked away, out the window. "And sometimes it seems as if I know them all. Funny, no?"

8. Psychobabble (Frou Frou)

Willy shook his head. "Not dusk. Wait until full dark." His smile had little amusement in it. "The truce begins at sunset. Don't risk getting there too early-- you might tempt fate."

9. How To Be Dead (Snow Patrol)

After a long and thoughtful pause, he said, "Were you in love with me?"

"Not...really," she said finally, and knew it was true.

"Well, that something solid to go on, at least." He laughed again, with barely a lungful of air. "After all those damn songs, I thought I ought to understand either love or death. And I'd rather study love."

Eddi wanted to say something comforting, but the conversation made her nervous. She found herself waiting for Willy to suggest they try again, to ask if she couldn't forgive his mistakes and fall into his arms once more. She was completely unprepared for what he actually said.

It was, "And the phouka?"

Eddi stared. "What?"

"Do you love him?"
