Now, I don't think there's anyone local on my f-list any more at all any more, but I said I'd do my damnedest to get Buddy's story out to hopefully find him a home, so that includes posting to LJ ( Read more... )

Hi, followed you over here from cat_lovers because your user picture made me cry. I was wondering where the text comes from? If it's part of a poem I'd love to read the rest of it. Thank you. :)

If I'd lived closer I'd love to adopt Buddy. He's gorgeous!

Good call! It is from a poem. The original is attributed to Mary Frye in 1932. It reads:

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

You can also find it as a song, with modified lyrics, sung by Lizzie West. When Flakey (the kitty in my icon- short for Snowflake) passed away at not quite 18 after battling with chronic renal failure, the song and poem were a great comfort to me. You can find a video someone made for the song here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=sQ0uzo2-3Rk

Flakey was so beautiful. :)

Thank you very much for sharing - what wonderful and sad poem. I really enjoyed the song as well. Even though my oldest cat (Charlie in the icon) is only two years old I sometimes make myself cry thinking about the day when she will pass away. It's silly, I know, but I can't help it. I love her so very much and she has enriched my life so much. I can't imagine my life without her. I think that's the biggest negative side of having pets...one day you will have to say goodbye.

Sorry to babble so much in here. lol.

Thank you!

I don't have a very full journal and it's mostly about my cats but I'm a faithful friend and commenter. Would you like to do the friend thing? You seem to love your pets as much as I love mine and I think I'd enjoy reading more about you.

Charlie is adorable! My LJ is mostly kitty!pic spam- especially with two growing kittens (and two grown-ups- I've got a full house, lol!), but always happy to have new friends! :)

And it's not silly, I cried when thinking about Flakey's death since we were both little (I was eight when she was born, so we grew up together)

Charlie is adorable!

Thank you! *beams* She's my baby! I really adore my little Snorkmaiden (icon) as well but Charlie came to me when I was ill and we really bonded then. It was as if she could sense that I wasn't doing well and she only left my side to go to the bathroom or to eat from the very first day that she came to live with us.

She's a rescue and was awfully abused in her previous "home". I am always so amazed at how sweet and trusting she still is considering how she was treated. They used her as a training toy for their dog! Some people don't deserve pets!

It's their loss...cause she's my baby and I adore her. :)

I love kitty spam! lol. My journal mostly contains things I have collected about cats online such as poetry and funny stuff. I post in it every now and then, sometimes in Dutch because I'm from the Netherlands. I'm better at the commenting thing though although sometimes the internet becomes too much for me and then I have to disapear for a while. If you want to know more about who is reading your journal feel free to ask though. I'm pretty open about my life. :)

I can relate to what you experienced with Flakey. I had a cat that was born at our house when I was about 8 and she died when I was about 19. (She was never very healthy and actually mentally disabled). I have had a very hard time getting through that and I still feel very sad about when I think about her. She was really special. :)
