Aran islands are known all over the world for their sweaters. True Aran sweater is made from unbleached wool, washed in cold water. Cold water keeps natural lanolin in the wool, keeping water-repelling properties of sheep wool. Cold washed wool also keeps natural sheep smell and the right Aran sweater smells of sheep.
Modern wool could be treated, bleached or coloured, but these products are still called Aran sweaters. It is only wrong to call them 'jumpers' as one farmer explained to me "Jumpers they are while still jumping".
