It's beginning to SMELL a lot like christmass.....

it's amazing to me how much certain scents really bring back memories of christmas...

obviously- the first is pine. but try to find a GOOD pine scent anymore- it's nearly impossible- there's all sorts of variation- WINTER TREE or CHRISTMAS MEMORIES or the closest i found- "HOLIDAY SAGE"- but no real PINE.... i remember back in the days before AEROSOL CANS were bad and everyone had that spray snow all over their windows- you could buy PINE SCENT that smelled just like the real thing- and i'm not talking pine cleaner- i mean- i remember my mom spraying the hell out of the living room when we put up our artificial tree. she just always said "there's nothing like pine to make you think of christmas" and it's true. and EVERY YEAR we would drag out that fake tree- and EVERY TIME mom would blast the house with fake pine. it's what you did. just like those metallic icicles- everyone hated cleaning them up- and everyone hated the way everyone else put them on the tree- but you HAD to have them. it's what you did.

glade AND yankee are trying to pass off MISTLETOE on me- and- frankly it aint workin. i'm currently burning a HOLIDAY SAGE candle and it is making me think of the few happyhappy times i had for christmass.

christmas cookies are obviously another christmas smell that i cherish.
but also ribbon candy and peanut brittle.
our christmas stockings- the ones we had since we were born smelled like christmas to me. a mixture of chocolate, peppermint and old plastic... i know that if i were to go unpack those stockings at my dad's- they'd still smell the same. (and hell they always smelled musty- so that would add to the nostalgia)

the smell of candles burning- just unscented white wax candles- they had a scent- not of a fragrance or perfume- but a smell of matches and bringing thoughts of hushed winter church service.

and oddly enough- scotch tape. i guess from wrapping presents.

my brother had this trainset he put up every year with those little scratchity pine trees- and i can remember the smell of those too- and every time i walk into a hobby shop- it brings that memory back.

gingerbread and cinnamon- but mostly from potpourri- my mom never made us actual gingerbread- but we always had a bowlful of gingerbread potpourri filled with those painted cinnamon pinecones...

the smells of christmas are always warm and yummy, and just fill me with all of the special memories that made up my holidays.

christmas
