I seem to be into memoirs lately, even if they are fictional. I guess I just like to escape into someone else's world for a while.

What I liked best were the descriptions of life in Japan during and after World War II. It is the story of people who do not have the ability to control almost any part of their lives and certainly no control over their own government. And yet their lives irrevocably change because of it.

The characters had depth and were well rounded. I'm not really sure if the main character Sayuri has any actual growth throughout the novel. She is a nice girl, but completely self absorbed till the end, and then still unaware of her affect on others. The true sign that this is a fictional memoir is that all loose ends are tied up just a little too neatly. If only real life worked out that way. :)
