Odd Fic is Odd

So I started writing a fic that was going to be Kirk/McCoy and perhaps around 3,000 words.  It's now a Sulu/Chekov fic and will, at this point be well beyond any word count I have currently tried my hand at.  Oh, and Kirk/McCoy... no where insight.

Brain... seriously?  What is the deal?
