Baekhyun's never questioned Chanyeol about the black sedans that roll up the Parks' driveway every alternate Friday. He remembers the men in tall hats and heavy emerald green cloaks, and the women in more elaborate velvet robes with silk linings in a bright violet, regardless of the season. Chanyeol just pulls Baekhyun away from the windows to settle back down onto the floor of his bedroom where they continue playing with their toy horses and knights. Baekhyun always hears the doorbell ring and the light chatter of the guests when Mrs Park lets them into the house. Silence follows the slight patter of footsteps down the stairs into the basement. Baekhyun stops wondering after awhile. It never bothers Chanyeol anyway so he simply shrugs and takes it as a common occurrence that he shouldn't worry himself with.
"Chanyeol, what do you want to be when you grow up?" Baekhyun asks in the midst of a mini ball-kicking session, mud streaks and grass stains up to his calves as he wipes at the perspiration on his forehead with the back of his hand, flopping down onto the grass in the middle of the field.
They are 10 now, and Baekhyun knows he shouldn't want to be a fireman anymore. Adults expect a certain type of answer when you're 5 and another when you are 10. He asks Chanyeol this because he wants to know that he isn't alone on this. He hopes that Chanyeol wouldn't grow up faster than he does.
Chanyeol gathers the ball and settles down onto the grass beside Baekhyun, trying to get as comfortable as he is allowed to in the middle of a muddy field as his mind churns for an answer. He already knows what he wants to be, and he thinks that Baekhyun just might laugh at his answer. But it is Baekhyun asking him this question and Chanyeol knows better than to lie to him.
"I want to be a wizard."
Baekhyun just stares back at him and chews at the inside of his mouth. His eyes then narrow and he moves his head into a questioning tilt. Chanyeol draws a sharp intake of breath through his nose and the edges of his mouth start to droop.
"But a wizard? Shouldn't you want to be a fire-fighting wizard, or I don't know, a crime-fighting wizard? Put your magical powers to good use and save a cat from a tree without having to climb it or something?"
A couple of blinks later and Chanyeol’s still so stunned by Baekhyun's reply that he stays absolutely still, eyes unblinking and mouth agape. Baekhyun just flicks him on the forehead and pushes himself up, brushing grass from the seat of his shorts and holds his hand out for Chanyeol. "Don't be an idiot, just a wizard's fine! Just don't leave me behind when you travel the world on your quest for more magic or something."
Chanyeol closes his mouth and reaches up for Baekhyun's hand to hoist himself up. The walk back to their respective houses was relatively quiet, save for a few childish pushes and kicks (they drop their ball down a slope and they look on dumbly as it rolls out of sight).
---
"I'm a wizard."
Baekhyun notes that Chanyeol has his eyes trained dead into his own, and he struggles to find a trace of a hint that this is just a joke, so that he could just laugh at Chanyeol and tell him to stop playing around but he fails. Baekhyun's learnt, through the years, to read Chanyeol like a book, and he's known Chanyeol for a pretty long time. There is no humour in Chanyeol's eyes this time and Baekhyun knows for a fact that he has to believe him because despite all the fun and games that they have, Chanyeol would know where to stop.
Then Baekhyun recalls the stories he’s heard from the neighbours, stories of bizarre folk with owls and crows. He remembers the black sedans, and the people in long flowy cloaks and robes, and there was once when a parliament of owls settled themselves across the rooftops of the row of houses on the Parks' side of the street. He remembers because his mother had thrown a fit at the bird poop littered on their house's porch, which was right beside the Parks'.
"Owls...." Baekhyun mutters, and he looks up at Chanyeol, who has his gaze lowered to the floor, feet shuffling uneasily. Baekhyun doesn't have to look at Chanyeol's face to know that he has his eyebrows drawn together, he also knows that what Chanyeol needs right now is to know that he believes him.
"I... believe you," he says softly. Chanyeol brings his head up to look back at Baekhyun and he utters a small what? like he can't believe what he's hearing.
"I believe you," Baekhyun says with a new resolve and Chanyeol's face breaks into a smile, teeth and dimple showing. Baekhyun reaches up to poke a finger at it and they go back to pushing at each other, wrestling for Baekhyun's Nintendo Gameboy that was lying on his bed.
And that was that.
Chanyeol doesn't bring it up again until a few of weeks later.
Baekhyun's parents had invited a bunch of people over to their house to celebrate his 11th birthday and Chanyeol stayed behind after everyone had left because well, he's special. The both of them proceeded to pitch a tent in the backyard of the house and pulled a couple of pillows and blankets into it. Baekhyun then dragged his new trampoline into the yard beside the tent. It's big enough for two! he'd exclaimed (and there was such a disarming smile on his face, Chanyeol would never admit that he was momentarily blinded, as cliché as it seemed).
They had went for a couple of rounds on the trampoline and after deciding that it was too warm to lay in the tent, they pulled the blankets out onto the trimmed grass of the yard and laid back down, facing the stars. Chanyeol had crept a hand over Baekhyun's that was lying out on the blanket in between them, and he let out such a great exhale that Baekhyun just knew that something was about to come.
"Baekhyun,"
Baekhyun hums in response. He already knows before Chanyeol has to say it, that he is going to have to leave.
"Baekhyun, I'm going to have to leave," Chanyeol's voice trembles and the hand on Baekhyun's tightens.
"Now? Do you have to go home?" Baekhyun decides to play stupid. But he shrugs his hand out of Chanyeol's grip and makes to link their fingers together instead, and he turns his head, not facing Chanyeol, and lets a single tear trail across his face and onto the blanket.
"No, I have to leave for school when autumn comes. It would be months before we'll be able to see each other again."
Silence.
"Baek-"
"It's okay," Baekhyun cuts him off. "It's going to be okay. It's just a couple of months, isn't it? And we will have Christmas, and then summer, all to ourselves."
"You just turned 11, not 16! Stop acting more mature than me, we're the same age." Baekhyun can hear the pout in Chanyeol's voice, and he wipes at his face with the hand not holding onto Chanyeol's.
"Goodnight Chanyeol, sleep well."
"Happy birthday, again," Chanyeol replies, and he continues, quietly, "I don't think I know how to be okay without you."
Baekhyun pretends not to hear him.
---
"Funny how we spend so much time together, you might think that some of my magic would have rubbed off on you. We could be magical together, don't you think?"
Baekhyun had simply narrowed his eyes at Chanyeol and tipped himself up on his toes to flick at Chanyeol's forehead, told him to "stop growing, for the love of god" and turned on his heels to get back into the house.
---
Mid-summer, an owl arrives while Chanyeol's tackling Baekhyun into the couch for the remote. "It's for you, "Baekhyun huffs from under Chanyeol's headlock. "Go get it and just - " "Just what? Hand over the remote? Nope. " Chanyeol lets his lips pop at the 'p' and strides over the couch to get the letter out of the owl's beak before bringing it back to the window, yelling a "goodbye!" at its fluttering wings as it flies homebound.
Baekhyun's fiddling with his fingers when Chanyeol returns to the living room. He feels the dip of the couch when Chanyeol sits beside him, and he nudges at Chanyeol's thigh with his toe, telling him to open it.
"You know what, I'll just wait till my parents get back before opening it. It's probably not too important anyway," Chanyeol starts but Baekhyun has other ideas.
"No, just open it. I haven't seen a letter sent by an owl before. Do they read it out to you?"
He's curious if they do read it aloud to the recipient, but what he really wants is to know what it says. Does Chanyeol have to leave this week? He doesn't think he's ready. He doesn’t think he’s ever going to be ready.
If it's of any consolation, Chanyeol looks like he's going to pee himself. He doesn't know the contents of the letter, having only just received his first via owl post. They've avoided the topic enough and perhaps it's time for them to really face it. Together.
Baekhyun inches closer towards Chanyeol on the couch, and Chanyeol flips to the back of the envelope and picks at the seal.

Baekhyun gets off the couch and makes up some lame excuse about being late for dinner at home.
Chanyeol just stares dumbly open-mouthed at his retreating figure.
Chanyeol leaves town later that week to purchase his uniform and school equipment. Baekhyun knows only because Chanyeol knocks on his window late on that Saturday night with an overstuffed gargantuan rucksack and he'd gotten excited for a second because he had thought that Chanyeol had wanted to runaway, or something. But then he sees the words Ollivanders Wand Shop on the edge of a long thin box sticking out of Chanyeol's rucksack and understands otherwise. He opens the window up anyway, and lets Chanyeol into his room. But only because he knows that climbing up the drain pipe to his window must have been a great feat considering Chanyeol's additional burden.
Chanyeol pours the contents of his rucksack out onto Baekhyun's bed spread and animatedly describes everything that he's bought to Baekhyun and Baekhyun just listens. It's all pretty interesting, he thinks. But it might be even more interesting he were a wizard too. They're just about to get to the uniforms when Chanyeol's face lights up. "Hold up," he says to Baekhyun, and he's back down the drain pipe, sneaking back home to get something Baekhyun doesn't know what.
Left alone, Baekhyun thumbs through the various textbooks Chanyeol's left behind on his bed. Potions, charms, defence against the dark arts, what? He picks it up and flips through it gingerly, pausing to read a few lines when something appealing catches his eye.
There's some sort of a mini racket going on outside his window, and Baekhyun plucks himself off of the bed to see Chanyeol climbing back into his bedroom, a large cage in tow.
A little hoot sounds behind Chanyeol and Baekhyun jumps.
"What the hell was that?" Baekhyun's panics and while he's really curious, he doesn't want whatever that thing is to wake his parents up.
Chanyeol, his face stretched wide in a secretive smile, brings the cage to his front and -
"An owl? An owl? You couldn't get something normal like... like a cat?!" Baekhyun's pretty sure he's raising his voice now. And he isn't really all that mad either. Everything's simply getting to him and let's just call it a coping mechanism. Although he doesn't think he's coping all that well at all.
"I wanted to get a cat. They were all so cute, so tiny, “Chanyeol starts to sniff and he continues. “And they reminded me of you. If I couldn't bring you along I thought that I could at least bring something that's like you. I could cuddle it to sleep or something. But I started sneezing when I had one in my arms and I can't deal with that all the time. What if I sneeze to death, Baekhyun? So I got this. It's a Little Owl. Like, its name is actually Little Owl, with the capital 'L' and 'O'. It's tiny and cute too, just like you Baekhyun. Just like you." Chanyeol's said everything in a rush, and Baekhyun is almost sure that he's going to start crying if he doesn't do something so he rushes forward and pulls Chanyeol in for a hug, and Chanyeol brings his head down to rest atop Baekhyun's, he’s already so much taller, and he winds an arm to clutch at the back of Baekhyun's shirt, the other still holding onto the cage.
"I'd really rather not be a wizard if it means leaving, Baekhyun."
Later that night, after sweeping the day's purchases onto the floor, they curl up in bed together and Chanyeol falls asleep first. Baekhyun adjusts his breathing to Chanyeol's own and falls asleep like that, the way they always have.
A loud pecking noise wakes them up and Chanyeol starts grumbling, legs thrashing about, throwing a mini fit so the blankets fall onto the floor. Baekhyun whines and fumbles around, attempting to look for the edge of the blanket so he can go back to sleep. The pecking doesn't stop and he opens his eyes feebly to look at what's causing the early morning disturbance.
An owl. Huh. Must be for Chanyeol then. Stupid owl's loud just like that idiot.
"Chanyeol open the window and get your stupid letter. It's too early and I hate you and your magic people and magic things. How does it even know that you're here, ugh. Get the owl, please." He drags out the 'please' as he smacks Chanyeol multiple times on the back and pushes at him.
Chanyeol tumbles out of bed and trips over his feet en route the window, rubbing at his eyes blearily. Baekhyun just flops back into bed and stretches his limbs out before wriggling his head under Chanyeol's pillow, bringing his own close to his chest and shuts his eyes, although he already is awake. He just doesn't want to know the contents of the letter. Remember, coping mechanism.
Several moments pass and it's getting too quiet. Baekhyun lifts his head from under the pillow and approaches Chanyeol who's still at the window, back facing Baekhyun.
As Baekhyun steps beside Chanyeol, ready to ask what's wrong, Chanyeol speaks.
"This letter is addressed to you."
He hands the heavy envelope to Baekhyun, and Baekhyun notes that it is addressed to him, alright. He smooths a thumb over the Hogwarts crest that sealed the envelope together, and looks up at Chanyeol. Chanyeol's expression is unreadable. Baekhyun's heart thuds in his ears.
Baekhyun walks back to sit on the bed, legs dangling at the edge, and Chanyeol follows suit, kneeling behind Baekhyun's back where he's seated. Baekhyun peels at the seal and cautiously pulls the letter out, unfolds it, and reads it.
"Oh my god," Chanyeol breathes from behind him.
Baekhyun's vision clouds over and feels more than sees the first of the tear drops that land on the letter in his hands.
"Chanyeol, I think your magic did rub off on me after all."
I think I'm going throw up all over myself I think I cried a bit writing this this is like my baby although it's horrible but it's still my baby ;_;
