Bunheads, season 2

In its second season, Bunheads is really solidifying its place as one of the most frustrating yet potential-filled shows on TV.

If I didn’t know that Amy Sherman-Palladino (creator of Gilmore Girls) were a hugely experienced TV writer, I’d chalk the show’s issues up to an inexperienced show-runner. Because, dammit ASP, this is not how you write. Bunheads is embarrassingly unrefined in terms of plotting.

As Salon.com’s TV reviewer pointed out, why would include a storyline about Michelle going on a blind date and not actually show the date on screen? Why would you do that?

The show’s increasing levels of pointless magic realism* are increasingly beginning to remind me of… Skins (see also: unrefined plotting). Going down the Skins road of whimsically embroidered episodes that have no relation to one another cannot end well. :/

*I think ‘pointless magic realism’ may be a contradiction, because magic realism is only magic realism if it has some underlying meaning, right? Otherwise it’s just bonkers.

All that said, I want to like Bunheads. It has a lot of heart, some wonderful actors, and it’s certainly x100 better than everything else on ABC Family. But I need sense to prevail over (whimsically embroidered) nonsense if I’m going to keep watching.
