The Education of Shelby Knox

I watched a documentary called The Education of Shelby Knox, which is about sex education in Texas. It's not a revolutionary game-changer of a doc (spoiler: Texas still doesn't have comprehensive sex education), it's just a quiet-inspiring snapshot of one girl (high school student and 'youth mission' member, Shelby Knox) trying to change things in her town for the better. I love the subtle transformation that we see Shelby make from True-Love-Waits-pledging identikit daughter into someone who is, in her words, her own person, with her own views on sexuality. It's a great doc (and a lot less depressing than most Issues documentaries).

However, I can't stop thinking about what the teen movie version of this doc would be like. :x

Obviously, the animosity between Shelby and her youth mission rival, Corey, would turn to passion somewhere in the second act. They'd make out a lot and then pretend it never happened. Until, slowly, they realize they really like each other and start openly dating.

Except... their differing views provide a wedge that keeps coming between them. And one day they're fighting about something political and Shelby stumps Corey with a dazzling one-liner and all Corey can do to reply is blurt, "dammit, Shelby, I love you and I don't want to talk about this anymore!"

And then... of course... THEY HAVE SEX. Outside of marriage. *gasp* Obviously, there's lots of angst, but there's finally acceptance and a realization that sex is not inherantly dirty or wrong.
