Make It Or Break It #1.19:
GROAN. I was going to write out a laundry list of Things That Were Wrong with this episode, but I so cannot be bothered. I think this episode's suckiness and inclination toward cliche is best summed up by the fact that, for entirely contrived reasons, Emily broke up with Damon (while he was literally yelling "BUUUU--" down the line), and she then slammed down the phone, slid down the wall, while choking back tears.
Seriously? Is this show written by robots, who get all their knowledge of human behaviour from Lifetime movies?
Otherwise, I enjoyed Sasha's continuing tendency to manipulate people (which he does like he breathes) -- there was really no reason for him not to just sit down and have an honest conversation with Payson about her nerves, but nope, much better to manipulate that bitch. :D (Side note: why is this show capable of making Sasha flawed, dark and interesting -- but all of its other characters are wearingly good, with no hidden motivations? It doesn't make sense.)
Ayla Kell, though she had precious little to do in this episode (and, honestly, Payson's post-surgery fear was wrapped up way too easily), continues to have great on-screen presence, which is really so weird, when you think what a poor actress she was at the show's start. Yay Ayla Kell -- I look forward to seeing you get a better gig than this.
Cassie Scerbo and Josie Loren both looked stunning in this episode, and I repeatedly felt like a Lauren/Kaylie femslash bone (...) was being dangled before me, so that was nice, I suppose.
And, of course, there was the Sasha/Emily D/s scene of awesomeness. *__*
"EMILY. TURN AROUND." And she does. And then he yells at her and reaches out like he's gonna knock the dirty plates out of her hands. And all the customers are looking at them, like, "...why is the waitress's abusive boyfriend here?"
(File under: Emily/Sasha scenes really should not be hot, but they really are.)
Probably the single moment of nuance in this whole episode came when Sasha just stood at the Pizza Shack's entrance and listened as Suzy (Suzy! Meth-head Suzy is my favourite incidental character!) chewed Emily out. You could really see Sasha's anger get a lot more complicated, as he began to realize how little he knew about Emily's life.
I kind of hate that Emily started crying, because she was characterized as the Tough Girl in the beginning and it bothers me that that has gone out the window. But I'm gonna fanwank it that Sasha likes it when she cries. :x
Be Good Johnny Weir #1.05:
It's pretty interesting to realize that they had to go all the way forward to ep5 to source footage for that opening montage of JOHNNY WEIR IS TOTALLY KER-AZY! in ep2. And, wacky packing hijinks aside (side note: so. much. dead stuff. D:), this episode was basically incredibly sad.
I know this show will not have a Happy Ending in skating terms, but it is at least reassuring to watch all this preparatory footage and know that Johnny skates well at the Olympics. And, in fact, I came out of this episode realizing that it's basically a portrait of anyone who has a difficult-to-achieve dream. When people succeed (at sports, at anything difficult), it's so easy to forget that they probably seriously considered quitting about a million times before they Made It. It's inspiring to watch Johnny get beaten down and pick himself up again, over and over.
Best moments of the ep:
Johnny taking ridiculous, half-naked pictures of himself and Tara and being all, "it's just for us! just for us!" .........and the camera crew. LMAO.
Johnny's little glance at the camera when talking about his flu shot ("...so to get this mammoth thing shoved in me...") was by far the comic moment of the ep. :D :D :D
