The Guardian: Your next box set: Breaking Bad

I think this article describes really well some of my favourite things about Breaking Bad. Namely, how dark and uncompromising it is. (There's a particular moment near the end of s2 that just FLOORED me -- and I am not easily shocked.)

However, what it fails to mention is that BB is also really, really funny. This ain't The Wire. This is a show that knows how to ratchet up the tension so far that it becomes absurd and hilarious.

I also feel like BB has gotten a reputation as being a bit blokey. It's really not. It does centre around two men, and it certainly doesn't trouble itself to shake up gender norms, but there are some great supporting actresses that give excellent performances.

Plus: schadenfreude! Having a bad day? On Jesse Pinkman's bad day, he gets evicted, his "livelihood" (the RV where he cooks meth) is impounded and he ends up covered in blue shit. Feel better about your life?
